Never saw the movie, but the Cabot was scrapped only a couple of years ago.

Cabot was, as Dedalo, in Spanish service from 30 August 1967 until decommissioned at New Orleans 5 August 1989, which I think covers the period when the movie was made (early-mid 70s). It must have been another one, unless the movie was made pre 1967?

As I remember the movie there was more than 1 carrier, all cvl or cve. All moored closely packed and almost derelict. If they were mothballed then not much care was being taken. My guess is they were waiting to be scrapped. Pretty sure it was shot in California, not sure which city it was set in.

Film is probably early 70s - could they be old CVEs waiting for the breakers ?

Ah, yes... the Dedalo. She was homeported in Rota, Spain, moored just ahead of the USS Canopus and the USS Blue Ridge. Used to pass by her nearly every day when I was staioned there. She appeared to have very few outward changes to her appearance from her WWII days... still carried her original AA armament IIRC.

If the movie was filmed in 1972, it may have been filmed on board one of the Essex carriers.  I believe the Bunker Hill was never repaired or upgraded after the war and went to the scrapyard in 1972.  I think she was moored in San Diego from the end of the war until scrapping and was towed to the Los Angeles area to be broken up.  I'm not 100% sure it was the Bunker Hill, but I do know there was one that was not repaired or updated and scrapped around 1972.

Just saw this a couple of weeks ago (in a Dirty Harry Callahan marathon some channel was running) - they didn't look like Essex class.

Pretty sure the movie was shot in SF and environs (most of it was, and it wasn't a really high budget film, esp. since Clint Eastwood wasn't quite the superstar he was today).

Bunker Hill was in San Diego.

Also in San Diego there was a slew of warships in mothballs, among which was a row of 4 or 5 CVEs. They were there as late as 1970.

I understand there still is a similar mothball fleet in San Fransisco Bay even today.
