Many of Y'all might already be aware of the Library of Congress online maps, but I will put this up for those that don't. There are many maps, in the thousands I believe, that can be viewed. Scrolling the maps from the site is rather clunky so I prefer to download them. You must have a viewer that will allow .JP2 extensions.

These are actual maps scanned(excellent quality) and when viewed with an appropriate viewer can be zoomed in to show in great detail.

Type David Rumsey civil war maps in google. I find those maps easier to scroll and easier to view, not to mention they are much bigger and can be viewed zoomed in to detail.

Thanks immensely for this link. It actually supplements a link I have been using for verification of Historical RR lines that existed during the Civil War. The Southern States maps of this link (Lloyds in particular) have each year, whereas the link I was using, only had the 1862 maps. This allows me to determine when the Rail line was actually built "during" the Civil War. This is helpful information needed for map work I am doing for AGEod's ACW.

Recently, I had a chance to visit Shiloh Battlefield. While there I was browsing for more maps and ran across a fabulous book replete with 303 Civil War Battlefield Summaries and over 100 topographical maps. Perfect for reproducing individual battlefield scenarios. At the time, I was looking for RR maps within the books, but when I saw this book, "The Civil War Battlefield Guide", I had to have it, thinking back to FoF and their tactical battlefield ideas. It also contains information about the current condition of these various Civil War battlefields and where they are located. A must have, if you like touring Civil War Battlefields. By the way, if you visit any of these Battlefields, ask for the CD audio tour. Other than an actual guide which most Battlefields do not provide, they are the best way to tour the battlefields.

Any recommendations for that?

We have a couple copies of the 'Official Military Atlas of the Civil War'. It's a nice BIG book, and shows the maps as drawn by the combatants. I can look up the ISBN for you if you'd like.

Anyone else have problems viewing the site with Firefox? I had to use IE to get into the site [X(] and even then I can't view the maps

I just ordered the battlefields book last night, on your recommendation. I'll have it by Thursday.

For some reason, I'm fascinated by the idea of reading that book -- but I realize that I can simply order it through inter-library loan and save the money. And despite the princess's hold on me, I certainly wasn't going to spend $99 on this photo of her:

Wow! I just got my order of "The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War" [:D] I got it in a rather large box, that I assumed, before opening, was filled with shipping stuff. Not so, says Mr. Wrong Assumption Man. This thing is huge... This sucker is 16 1/2 in tall X 13 1/4 in wide 1 1/2 in thick hard cover bound. Geez, I'll need a truck to cart it around. I do like the fact that it contains 821 Maps, 106 Engravings, and 209 Drawings, but it doesn't have the actual battle accounts. It's strictly an Atlas, so my Battlefields book will work great as a supplement to it.
 
The "Atlas" is rather poorly indexed, being a collection of Maps. At some way off point in the future I may see if I can make a better Index with Adobe, but that is way off for now, I'm buried at the moment.

I told you it was BIG! (It's a coffee table book... that is, you can use it as a table OR as a book. [:)] ) It doesn't have narratives, but the maps are as described by the participants.

I just got my copy of "The Civil War Battlefield Guide" and Gray_Lensman was certainly right. It's an excellent book to have. I wish I had had it a year ago -- editing those bios would have been much easier. GL, thanks again for the recommendation.
