On the Eastern front, German tanks were generally kept to the rear and used often in "fire brigade" roles.
When the German infantry detected enemy tanks coming, they would pop purple smoke which was a signal for the need of friendly tanks to counter the incoming enemy tanks.
Green smoke was used as a "retreat" signal.
