I'm currently looking for a book that collects useful civil war maps.
Any recommendations for that?

I second that request. I happened to find (in the search for the aforementioned subject) a beautiful, hard cover, Historical Atlas of WW2 in mint condition in a used book store here in Texas for $20. I would love to find the same for the Civil War and WW1. If anyone does know of a title or has a suggestion, please pass it along with a link if you could. Cheers!

Just seconding Aurelian's reccomendation. The Official Atlas is a big, hardcover book but B&N usually has it in the bargain book section for --I think -- under $10. It's a steal at that price. I recall paying about $25 for it ten years ago and it was still a steal. All kinds of maps, technical drawings and sketches. Every major battlefield and most of the minor ones are represented. Also, very detailed maps of the entire country at that time, with RR lines and a lot of towns and hamlets that no longer exist. It's a must-have for CW buffs and wargamers in particular.

I've been picking up various map books for the ACW since Take command:  Second Manassas came out.

I have found one recently that I think is excellent, and an bargain (this is the 3rd site I'm posting on regarding it).  It is The West Point Atlas of War:  The Civil War by Brigadier General Esposito.  The maps have been used for training purposes and all the major campaigns are represented, broken up into 4-5 maps showind the dispositions and movements of the various units.

Best part is that it's currently in the bargain section of Borders Books for $9.99 in a softback edition.  Really terrific addition, and knocks the snot out of the Atlas of the Civil War I picked up at Barnes and Noble for $19.95 (although there are MANY more maps in that one, with generally greater detail - bring a magnifying glass).

On this same note, can anyone suggest a similiar historical atlas (maps, maps, and more maps) that covers Napoleon's campaign(s)? I have ordered the Civil War Atlas and would love to have something to accompany Empire In Arms and Napoleon's Campaigns. Reading really does add to the imagination/immersion factor to a degree that I can't help myself but to either re-read a book or pick something up to accompany any new game I get. Thank you in advance of any information or suggestions.

Many years ago I got a book that contained topigraphical (sp?) maps of all the major battlefields that was done fol;lowing the end of the war by the government but In the many years sense then i have moved many times and I can't seem to find the book or even the name (SIGH) its hard when you are old. I did see a similar book at one of the big book store chains called something like "Atlas of the Battlefields of the American Civil War" or some such thing.
One interesting thing was many years ago the SSI game company came out with a game on Gettysburg call Terrible swift Sword" that was the same scale as the computer game by talonsoft. If you look at the maps they are almost identical and did use some of the same material. You might send an email to the kind folks at ageod.com and ask them for there sources for there maps.
