AVG Anti-Virus Causes Fatal Error 9999999

The latest data update to AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition just decided that witprec.exe contains the Trojan - PSW.Banker4JGT. This results in a 999999 fatal error.

Fortunately, I was going to restart my current game anyway. Unfortunately, the WitP uninstall routine gets just a little carried away and deletes game saves as well as the executables.

BACKUP FREQUENTLY AND OFTEN. I am always bothering other people about this and just got bit myself. I do have a backup but it is from a while back. I guess its just a little reminder from "The Computer Gods" practice what you preach.

I just had the same problem.  I turned off my computer and did a re-start but no luck.  I cannot get the game to load whatsoever.  The Fatal Error 999 code keeps coming up.  How do I fix this?  PLEASE do not tell me to do a reinstall.  I have three variations of this game loaded and do not want to spend over an hour reloading ALL of them...

Must be an incremental update issue.
Been using AVG for 6+ years and never seen this.

Buy the full version, it's more superior to the freebie.[;)]
It has better individual control.

John, I believe that means you are missing a file. I think maybe AVG renamed it, deleted it, or quarentined it. Whatever, it is not available now. You will need to find the missing file( I think it is something like WitPrec.exe )

If you are having problems and still have witprec.exe in your installation - turn of AVG resident shield, load WITP, etc., then you can turn on the resident shield again.

If your witprec.exe is GONE - you have to reinstall. You can NOT retrieve it from the virus vault as AVG "fixes" the file before storing it there.

If you are running mods (like i am, as well as numerous variants of the game for beta stuff) - then do this:

1. rename your orignal folder of WITP (to something you won't forget in 2 minutes).

2. turn off AVG resident shield

3. Load new installation of WITP. Then do all the upgrades - WITP 1.804 comprehensive, and 1.806 revised. It won't work if you don't do all the upgrades (i've tried!)

4. copy the witprec.exe from your new installation to your old folders. i'd also make a backup and keep it somewhere where an antivirus program can't get to it (removable disk file, memory stick or other offline storage). This was if something similar happens, it won't be such a pain.

i had 8 copies of this backed on on various computers - but of course AVG removed all of them!

5. rename your folders.

6. Check out to make sure WITP runs.

7. turn AVG res. shield back on again.

Good luck!

EDIT: of course, if you backed up the actual installation of WITP (rather than just having backups of the installer files, then you can copy witprec.exe directly - but i think it must be the same version or it won't work.

I have WitP loaded on a separate computer that I use at home so I will TRY to copy this file and reinstall it onto the computer with AVG.

Will post as to whether this works or not.

Thanks for the advice!

Sounds like AVG got your witprec as well... fortunately, they seem to have been on the ball, and corrected things the next day. AVG no longer thinks the file is a virus/trojan horse, so we are able to load and play WITP normally again with the latest (daily) update.

So, if anyone is still having problems - run the update manually and you should be ok from now on. You will STILL have to correct any deleted witprec problems, though.

If you don't have an installation CD/original installer program, you will have to re-download, i think.
