This happened twice in the same battle when CSA cavalry was charging AI US cavalry. The second time occurred in the same restarted battle when the game turn was replayed. An earlier save (not just before) is available if required,

Here is the point it happened:

On the 1st occasion too the US cavalry held off the attack.
