Subs as equalizers

In two separate games of the Coral Sea scenario as the Allies, after I sank the AI's CVs, IJN subs immediately began taking out my CVs!

Bizarre coincidence, or some type of play balance algorithm?

I've lost capitals to subs before (worst was losing two japanese BC in Midway to the one sub) but never managed to lose a carrier.

I've haven't played the IJN as much as the play balance isn't great, but as the Allies I've lost at least 3 CVs -- despite their escorts -- to IJN subs!

Coincidence. The submarine routines have no idea of events in the rest of the game. However, the slower your TG the higher the chance of a successful sub attack, so any TGs that have been slowed through damage will be more vulnerable. Also, ASW in 1942 was pretty rudimentary, so escorts will not be helping as much as you might expect or hope.
