Air strike surrenders

Is there a reason my air units sometimes surrender after otherwise normal air strikes?

You did that with the standard not modified ww2 masterfile ?

I've never seen that happen before on an unmodified game. How did fighters and dive bombers end up surrendering after attacking infantry like that? Are they staff and smg infantry units?

The masterfile is modified, but the only change pertaining to air units is to extend their range.

I think your should look at your changes again here if you missed something.
Probably something is set wrong here since the fighter III and IV of the original masterfile (extended range)
for example works wonderful.

You should compare their and your settings in each detail to find the problem. I´m sure you´ll find something.

did you set morale to 0 or something?

this is very odd.

I haven't changed morale for anyone.  The surrenders don't happen every time, only once in a while.  Could it have something to do with the modified range?  Maybe they finish their attack with an odd number of action points or something and can't get home?  I don't remember changing any other settings for air units, but I'll check.  Vic, can I send you a copy of my scenario?  Maybe your eyes can spot something mine haven't.

I conduct airstrikes with more than 16 units on a regular basis. Never had that happen.[&:]

HMMM...
Well that's different. Are we talking about 16 corps or 16 subformations.
I was refering to 16+ subformations of aircraft.

Why would that make them surrender?

Why would that make them surrender?
Could it be that some aspect of the game engine thinks that there is nowhere for them to land, since their base hex is overstacked?

I thought that was fixed so that you could not GET more than 16 units in a hex? I know when I try it tells me it can not make the move due to overstacking.

I just did a quick test, by creating new units in a hex that already contained air units in it. I added units until the 16 unit limit was reached, and then launched an air strike with one of the air units. After combat resolution, the air unit was destroyed in the same fashion as shown by mtvaill. Looks like some sort of bug, since the 16 unit limit was only reached, and not somehow breached in this case.

To duplicate this, open the Russia 41 scenario, and create new units in hex (4,20) until the 16 unit limit is reached. Then, launch an airstrike against the hex immediately to the north it, at (4,19). Use one of the two air units that started the game in (4,20). After the end of combat you should see that the striking air unit suffers complete losses.
