how does one save the game, if its only solitaire

The first icon in the top left hand corner takes you back to the main menu.

Also good to know: That after clicking the “End Current Phase” button the program auto saves the phase you just completed. For instance, if you just finished the Diplomacy Phase the program would save it as “autosave Diplomacy.sav”. Keep in mind though, that the program will overwrite this diplomacy phase file with data from the next diplomacy phase (only have one autosave file per phase).

If I go to the main menu I haven't the option to save......and I can see that there is no .sav file in the directory

You can't save during PBEM - that is to prevent people cheating.

Are you perchance still playing with the troubleshooting test exe? If so, switch back to the normal one as the test one does not have save/load capability.
