Cavalry Countercharge

I'm missing something in the mechanics of this because I can't get it to work. I've got this option checked. I literally tried a test where I placed an Allied cavalry unit in good order facing towards the direction I intended to a French cavalry unit. In the French turn I moved a French cavalry unit to within three hexes of the Allied unit. In the charge phase I "charged the French cavalry unti towards the Allied cavalry unit. At no time was I given the option to countercharge with that Allied cavalry unit. I tried again with the French cavalry unit four hexes away and the same thing - as I charged one hex at a time towards the Allied cavalry unit no option was given to countercharge right up until I moved adjacent to the Allied cavalry unit. I reversed the situation and was never provided a countercharge option with the French cavalry unit either. Can someone refresh an old memory about how this is supposed to work?

IIRC you countercharge in your defensive phase, not in the cavalry charge phase.
