impact of sinking convoys

Hey, I just got the game and have a couple questions about convoys.

1. what is the impact of damaging or sinking a convoy? I assume it reduces some of the Allies production points on a future turn. Is there any other impact?

2. If I have a choice between sinking a convoy (like size 3, maybe) that I've attacked previously or attacking a larger convoy, which option is better. I assume all that matters is how many points you eliminate, and that there's no advantage to sinking over damaging.

Thanks!

Convoys that land in the Uk or USSR via Murmansk give that many PPs.
I wonder about the value of U boats. They cost 70 PPs and I have yet to have one survive long enough to sink that many PPs of convoys.

I only build U-boats after I have reduced the British fleet with air attacks or attacks on ships in port with ground units. The DD units in particular need to be destroyed before U-boats can be effective. My favorite tactic with U-boats is to use at least six of them together to surround and completely destroy the Murmansk convoys. They are all over 100 points, and this seems to really hurt USSR production.
