TIW escape and evasion?

Okay, I understand that counter measures are actually factored into the weapon/target modeling itself.

When driving a sub ...

So, what are preferred ways to evade a torpedo?

First, do you attempt to ID the torpedo? I would assume this would be important in the sense that a 6nm range torpedo could potentially be outrun simply based on fuel. Whereas a 50nm range torpedo is not going to be outrun.

Myself, I have been:

(1) Clear path.

(2) Set default speed to ahead flank and depth deep.

(3) Zooming in to the group map at 128X and putting in a zig-zag path. Legs are perhaps a mile or less.

(4) Alternating depth a waypoints between shallow and deep.

(5) If I evade it (them), then going back to deep and creep, and making sure that the sonar is shut down (if the nag had made me turn it on).

The thinking is that course changes may loose it in conjuction with crossing the layer. Or should I try a lucky rabbit's foot?

Thanks.

I don't bother trying to do that, unless the weapon is fairly distant and I have a bit of time. Torpedoes can sometimes be quickly identified (at least by type, that is, whether air dropped lightweight or heavyweight sub/ship launched) by their speed. This can only come from experience. If the torpedo is close, however, don't bother. Just run !

I should add that if you choose to be 'cool under pressure', you don't always have to assume that the torpedo (especially an air dropped torpedo) has acquired you. On occasion, I have been able to creep away from an LWT that is circling a mile or so away from me.

I carry out most of the maneuvers you mention, i.e. changing course, depth, sometimes (though this is risky) slowing to try and regain the torpedo contact. In most cases its simply a case of trying to outrun the incoming torpedo.
