Hi there, I've just recieved my first turn ever for PBEM and I'm just wondering how to progress. I've got the turn on a Email attachment but when I try and start the game by Email it starts me off as japan and I'm mean't to be the allies.

If I was to open the attachment will it load the game automatically?

I also had to put a password in when loading does my opponent need this password or do we use different one?

Can someone give us some help on how to start PBEM I know it's the basics but when you don't know the basic you ain't going to get very far!!!!!!!!!!! [:(][:(][:(][:(][:(]

Ok, you should have had an attached xxx.pws file. Put this in your WITP SAVE folder, it may overwrite a game already saved in that slot.

Once you have put this in your save folder then start WITP normally, when you come to the Load Game screen scroll down to the XXX game save, select that and open the turn - it should laod and ask you to input your password, then open ready to allow you to give your orders.

If your opponent has also sent the 001.pws file as well this is also moved to the SAVE folder and this then allows you to run the combat replay - though beware, it won't necessarily show an accurate version of what happened.

See also several replies in the WAR ROOM subforum.

EDIT: there is also a sticky at the top of the Main WITP forum about how to start a PBEM game that is very useful.

Ok, my computer is different to most in that I have several hard drives. If you look at the screenshot (Vista) then the top outlined in red shows the WITP install is on Hard disc D (default is C drive so look there first). Sometimes its within a Matrix Games folder. The within the War in the Pacific folder are a series of sub folders, one of which is the SAVE folder. Double click on that and you will see the save files. All I do is save the attached xxx.pws file to that folder and it overwrites the last saved XXX.pws one.

Hope that helps.

If not shout again.

Roger

Also tell your opponent that he has to end his turn when he's done, not save the turn (you must do the same when you've played your turn, too). The difference is that after ending the turn you cannot reload the save, since WitP now assumes that the next one opening that file will be your opponent, and it will ask for his password.

Right I've got a file that says witp009.pws (1100.9 KB) I have dragged it across and put the file in C:\Matrix Games\War In The Pacific\SAVE. Then I loaded up WITP changed the settings to head to head and clicked load game but can't see the file anywhere!! I've tried to load up slot 9 from the 009 off the file header but that's just an old game I had against the AI. Cheers for all the advise so far but does anyone know where i'm going wrong?

Do I need to turn my computer off and then on again?

No, there's no need for a reboot.

Are you sure you replaced the old 009 file when trying to copy the new one into the \Save folder? Did you click "yes" when Windows asked youi if you want to replace the old file?

Sounds like Joe sent you a save from another PBEM.

Don't change the setting to "Head to Head". Just hit "Load a Saved Game" and select the saved file number, or "001 Combat save" if you want to see the turn replay.

Also, when you load the save file (009?) and it asks for your password, make sure it is asking for "Player 2" if you are the allies. If it is asking for "Player 1", then your opponent didn't execute the turn.

Something else that might help. At the directory list that Roger showed you, "right click" on the SAVE directory and hit "copy" then "right click" on your desktop and hit "paste shortcut" (NOT PASTE). This will put the save folder on your desktop. In the future, all you will have to do is drag-n-drop the file attachment (game turn) sent to you to this save folder without having to hunt for it through a directory tree.
