Sound File Solution?

Appears I have arrived at a temporary solution for the Halftrack sound files - wav 54/55/56 - which have been clobbering WAW (for me at any rate they have).

Please Note: The following applies to Windows 98, First Edition - I don't know about Win 95, NT or even Win98 SE.

Win 98 (4.10.1998 is what I have) has a sound file recorder; I didn't know this. click on Start\Programs\Accessories\Entertaiment - Sound Recorder should be there. I opened Sound Recorder, loaded the files shown above and clicked on "Reduce Volume" twice for wav 54/55, wav 56 required a third reduction. I saved these files to a separate directory, then copied them into the game.

I've tested the edited wav files in three different scenarios, they seem to work OK now. I suspected all along that overmodulation might be the problem. A better solution, of course, is wav files at a recorded level equivalent to the other wav files. There was talk about new sound files to be released same time as v2.0, does anyone know if this is still planned?

This wasn't a case of simply "too loud", although I know what you mean, Six.

What happened with my system was the Halftrack sound took the ALL the game sound out, just gargled and fizzled and died. You could a) save, exit and restart or 2) try moving a tank, which usually but certainly not always brought back the sound. So it usually meant a).

I'm not the only WAW player with this problem, for a time I simply deleted the HT wav files, but am not one to give up easily. The HT's are now subdued, but do not screw up the rest of the game sounds, either. A partial solution, I guess, but it does work.

Give me the wav file number for the "River Patrol" gunboat in French Move, I'll try to fix that one also. Actually, if there were a list of all the wav files - or some way we could determine which wav a particular icon was using, it would be most useful when it comes to tinkering and tweaking.

BTW, if someone want copies of the "quieter and nicer" HT wav files, I"ll be glad to send them.

Um, I offered the Master Sound List to anyone that wanted a copy a few weeks back. Email me at jonj@thegamers.net and I'll send you a copy. Specify if you want it in Word or .TXT format...

Oh yeah, new HT sounds will be out with the patch. The ones included with the initial release were placeholders that we forgot to remove. I'm not sure of the sounds will be in the same .zip as the update or as a seperate file. I am adding/changing sounds daily...

Jon - Thanks for the offer of the Master Sound List. Let's see how the new sound files work out - if they are trouble free, the exercise doesn't have to continue. Talk about the sound aspect of the game kind of dropped into the background, now that we know new files will be available I would want to give them a chance first, before doing anything else.

Thanks again,

Byron
