CVE Long Island

I'm trying to load some fighters on the Long Island for transport. Is this possible? I tried to fly them on first then tried to load them in port. I'm left wondering if just float planes can fly off her , can someone inform me what type of aircraft she uses?
Thanks and have a safe holiday and Happy New Year.[:)]

I believe the LI is a CVE and can launch
any carrier capable a/c. Just make sure you don't exceed 10% of her total capacity, which I recall is only 16; so don't put more than 17 a/c on her or she will just turn into a ferry.
AVs are great for bolstering base support when you are short of engineers and other logistical troops. You can even dispand an AV TF in port and it will still increase air/airfield support.

Just as I remember by old game I was able to load a 24-aircraft unit onto the LI and I was still able to start them off here. But due to capacitiy issues several aircraft became reserved and had to be "repaired" to fly off to their target to merge with their parent unit again.

The LI really shines as a vessel used for the tranfer of LBA (P-39s, P-40s, etc.) between Oz and the NHs. When the taxi svc. is no longer needed you could use her for ASW by throwing some SBDs or torpedo bombers on her and giving some DDs to the TF.

I am only in the early stages of my second campaign game, but it seems to me, albiet with my limited experience, that there isn't much of a need for shuttling those planes. Both remote main bases get steady flows of reinforcement fightes/fighter bombers. I tended to use the LI for anti sub operations and most importantly as bait and a decoy for my main carrier force.

Hans,
It depends on how the battle develops (which is obviously influenced by the scenario and the opponant).
In my game against borner, my only opportunity to get my fighter pilots any combat experience is at Nevea (small island NE of Espiritu Santu). When my forces were driven from New Guinea, I no longer had any bases in the west within 1st generation fighter range. Thus, I have been using the Long Island to shuttle P40s from Australia (both US and RAAF) to get them some combat time and to give my Marine Wildcats a break.
When I am ready to attempt to retake New Guinea, I anticipate needing some veteran squadrons.

The ability to shift forces is always a must have option as flexibility can mean the difference between victory and defeat.
