As far as I can tell, lending money to an AI results in a nuisance check in the next month's diplomatic phase -- which can result in the AI choosing to break the alliance without penalty. *Not* offer the money, and the nuisance check doesn't happen. A bit perverse?

I have come to dislike that nuisance, so good to know, no more money for those AI bastards

besides some of them seems to want so much money from you, to clear the nuisance, if i dont pay i can normally not maintain the alliance long, especially as GB vs Austria.
