Another question - retreat from detailed battle

The first time I lost a detailed battle I was fighting alongside a greater number of allied troops. When the retreat was sounded their troops promptly routed off the map leaving me to face the music. At this point I realized I had no idea - and the manual didn't say - how to retreat off the map. You're supposed to get three turns and it's all over, but after over a dozen turns my cavalry was still kicking (and still taking casualties). They kept going until they were either captured or routed with massive casualties.
Is there a way either to sound the retreat on one's own initiative, voluntarily rout units, and/or retreat off the map? If not, there really should be.
Ever since then I've been fighting any battles I thought I was at all likely to lose as quick battles to avoid this problem, so I haven't run into it again.
With all the questions and bugs I should also say that CoG is an absolutely fantastic game and by far the best I've ever played for the musket era - so thanks very much to the developers!
(FYI, I'm running 1.2.25)
