Deleting cities/towns?

Dumb question - is there any way to delete a city/town/etc in the editor?

Yes, at the top of the editor click the 'hex' button, then on the following screen click 'remove loc from hex'. Then you'll probably want to change the terrain of that hex because it will still look like a city (although the city is gone, the graphic will remain until you replace it with something else).
