Subs too difficult to hit?

Hi to all,
I am currently trying this scenario: "Hide and Seek, small scale NATO ASW sortie". I detected one soviet sub, and I begin to hunt her with my helos. I fired to her about 8 torps (MK46 NEARTIP) from 4 different helos from very small distance: the sub managed to dodge them all. No hits. Are these hit rates realistic? Do I miss something?

Bye

Not much I can tell you other than that the 'paper' hit probability for your torpedoes in that scenario (and battleset) is 60%. Sometimes the odds just don't go your way. Keep dropping your torpedoes right on top of the target and - eventually - you will be rewarded. [;)]

Make sure you've got a solid lock on the target before dropping. Sometimes it helps to have two helos bracket the sub with torps, too, such that running from one torp runs him into the other. I've also noticed that the AI tends to be willing to drop from quite a long range, so it's often worthwhile to refuse the first attack and manually fly the helo right on top of the sub, instead of attacking from 4 or 5 miles out. Oh, and don't let the AI drop more than one torp at a time!

Manual dropping of the sonoybouys and the torpedoes is absolutely neccessary, especially with helos. Never launch without a full lock, use dipping sonar as well (stick a helo with it at vlow and hover in the general area) to help detection. Launch on top of them. So close they would hear the torpedo's engine start up.

Never launch without a full lock ...

I wouldn't say 'never', as I've sometimes dropped a torp on an uncertain, quiet contact to try and goad him into kicking in the flank speed (and thereby get a better contact). But, yes, generally speaking, you're right, dropping torpedoes on an area of uncertainty is a recipe for a miss.

Actually, subs are easy to kill:

If you simply fire on first detection at distance, you will surely miss.

If you resolve the location of the sub with buoys and then don't release the torp until you are directly over it, it is almost a guaranteed kill unless it is a high end nuke sub. Then, you may need two or three torps, since it make give you a good run.

The key issue is that if you want to be a good sub killer, then you must invest a lot of micro-management. It really gets challenging when you have three subs to prosecute at once. Recommend that you dispatch the closest sub as quick as possible so that the second does not get time for an escape.

Thanks a lot, tonight I'll try the scenario again. I did not know about helos at VLOW and and dipping sonar, thanks again!

If you're looking at your ASW helos on the in-game database (under Sonars) It will have a 'D' next to the sonar name as opposed to an H,S or T (Hull, Sonobuoy & Towed respectively).

Thanks for the input! Still learning after 10+ years. That's what makes this game so great!![;)]
