I was thinking about starting a league, using real players, and just becoming the GM, and simming a few season to give my league some history before I jumped in. Any feedback would be appreciated.

There's nothing wrong with establishing a pre-existing alternative history. I gave that approach some thought, but elected to go game-by-game from day 1.

Starting from 1901 would be cool, BUT reconfiguring the leagues to be historical, before stability was established, would be a pain in the butt. It all depends on how historical you want it to be. There's the first generation of purpose-built ballparks to be considered, too.

What year are you considering starting in?

I was thinking sometime between 1940-1950.  Every other league I have started in 1970 and up, and I wanted to try somethin older than that.

Well, the era of the 40s-50s is my favorite one. Aside from the NY teams (Giants, Dodgers, Yankees), the Cardinals were perennial contenders, and there are other teams to consider (the Indians, Braves, Pirates).

My suggestion to you: start in 1939 or 1940, and sim the leagues till 1946, when everyone came back from WWII. Take over a team in 1946.

Thanks for the advice, KG.  I think I am going to give it a try.  I always enjoy drafting a team, so now I just need to find the time.
