Replacements go where?

Have only been playing AACW for about a week, but I am puzzled re replacements; I prefer selecting replacements -- usu. line infantry and cavalry -- over new units, but the only messages I seem to get is that my garison units are being reinforced.
How do I replace the losses incurred by my Armies and their correponding Corps?

You can't choose. The replacement process is automatic.
But you can prioritize units for getting replacements by putting them on passive posture.
Also there is a difference between regaining loss hits (the red part on the elements of the element panel) and regaining a full missing elements from a brigade.
The former happens on every unit regardless of where it is placed, but the speed varies a lot (on big cities and depots is much faster than on the wilderness).
The later can only happen to units placed on areas with depots or level 2 or plus cities.
Make a search on the Ageod forum for "replacements" and you will find a lot more info and details about it

Thanks, I'll do that; but if I understood what you said, if I want an Army/Corps/Div/Unit to get replacements, I should leave it in a large city on passive posture.

If you are in a hurry... yes
If you only want to get rid of the losses on the elements ("red part)" you dont need a city/depot, but it will be faster there.
To get full element back yes, you need at least a level 2 city or a depot.
Also, passive gives priority. If you have 1 arty replacement on store and two units need it, the passive one will get it before the defensive or offensive posture one. If you have plenty replacements in store (and you should... as a rule of thumb strive to have a 10% of your on map force for of kind of unit as replacements) its not that important.
You can check it easely with the CSA on the april 61 campaign. On turn 3 or 4 you get two big free armies: one under Beuregard on Richmond, another under Johnston on The Valley, on an area without structure.
Both armies are very undestrwnght (only at 30% or so) and will need lot of replacement for several turns till get 100%... but the one on richmon will be at full strenght on 3 or 4 turns, whereas the other one will regain strength veeery slowly.
As soon as its unlocked you should move the later to winchester or get it out of the Valley to Manassas, Richmond... so he can speed up the process an gain full missing elemnets. This stacks has several briagdes that need this (bee brigade, Smith brigade, the cavalry brigade which begin with just one element and can becom a full 5 element cavalry brigade with his own horse guns). Out of a city or depot area they will never gain this elements.
Oh, and a last tip: brigades inside a division don't regain FULL elements (they gain strengh normally). So don't put bee or smith brigades on a division until they have recieved all the elements...this is a chore but seem to be an engine limitation
