Question on making mines

I am trying to model space mines and have tried to use the Great Patriotic war naval mines as a template to build these.
Having a bit of a problem in placing them though as whilst in GPW land mines are easy to place via a transfer from a HQ you cannot build and place Naval mines, the blue transfer key is greyed out and when mousing over it states that 'cannot strategically transfer naval or air SFT's'.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I think that you would need to have a naval unit in the hex that you want to transfer the sea mines to. Try to do a (red arrow) transfer from an HQ that has produced the mines into an existing naval unit that is in the hex that you wish to place the mines in. It would need to be within normal movement range of the SFT.

Another way to do it would be to make a destructible Loctype which drastically slows down movement. Then you would need to give "mine-sweeping" spaceships some anti-structural damage capability.

You could make a mine-field layer SFType that when you upgrade it changes into a minefield SFType. That way you could move it around like a normal spaceship and only upon Upgrading it will become static minefield.

Have already tried that but as the hex is a sea location type it does not have a regime owner and therefore although you can transfer them into an existing naval unit you still have to build a new formation but it does not allow you to build a new formation if you do not own the hex.

Not a bad idea but that only slows movement (I have already moddled this for the Neutral zone). I want ships to be damaged. Vics idea is interesting and probably the best way forward. I will try it this week. Its annoying when you get stuck on something and cannot think of the answer. At last I can move forward with this.
Thanks for everyones suggestions [&o].

....
Once you have the mine in with the naval unit, next turn transfer the ship out to a unit on a planet, leaving the mines behind. Time consuming to place mines but if they are powerful enough then it's worth the effort. This is ho I placed new mines in GPW trials.....

You don't even need to wait until the next turn. As long as the "placing" SFT's in the unit have enough AP to get to another unit, they can transfer out immediately. As an example, placing unit moves 50 AP out to hex. Unit with mines transfers them to placing unit. SFT's originally in placing unit transfer back to a unit within 50 AP.

I have tried Vics suggestion of making a mine layer upgradeable to a mine but this has the same original problem in that you can only upgrade when you own the hex. The other suggested method of transferring into and out of fleets is really messy and hard to explain for noobs so I don't really want to go down that path. Any other possibilities? I will have to scrap them if there is no reasonable way they can be deployed.
