I want to:
10.3.4 Depots on Fleets
Depots may be placed on heavy fleets (not light fleets) and transports that are in a sea area, for the provision of invasion supply.
What are the button combinations required to make this happen? I have a heavy fleet in the english channel. Plenty of money and spare depots. Clicking on either the sea area or the hvy fleet and then clicking on the add depot button always gives me an error message: Unit cannot be moved or placed here!

Clicking on the heavy fleet and then clicking 'add depot' should work but you need to have invaded by disembarking troops.

You need a depot in a unbesieged supply source(port). To be able to add depots on heavy/transport-fleets.
Then it should work.

Are you sure there isn't a depot on another (nations) fleet in the same sea area, you can't have 2 depots in one area including sea zones.

Per Bresh, this is the most common cause (From what I've seen) of a depot placement on a fleet restriction.
Check it out...

Thank you everyone for all the info. Especially the but you need to have invaded by disembarking troops. After several reloads and redoing the tutorial I figured out that my depot in Brest was blockaded.
I have been waiting for a computer version of the game since 1986. I am extremely excited to play it but the less than helpful error messages are really putting a damper on my enjoyment of the game. Since I once programmed for a living I completely understand how boring and frustrating and sometimes complicated it is to program error messages, none the less they are really important. I hope that in future updates more informative error messages can be included.

Actually I need to go back and correct my post in the tutorial. That blockaded port should only matter for sea supply. Invasion supply would only be blocked by another nation's depot in the same sea zone (thanks Dave) or not having invaded any adjacent land areas.

I fail to understand what the computer version of the game has to do with this being a problem. If you missed it on this map, what would cause you to see it on a paper map? The computer may be an unforgiving arbitrator, but it seems to me that it is the player's responsibility to show that there is a supply source available to provide supply.
What more information could the computer have given you to help you figure this out? Should it check all of your coastal depots and count them up, and then check whether they are blockaded or not, and maybe present you a table with this information? To me, that seems like too much clutter, but maybe a "more info" button would be appropriate?
