Smolensk Estonia

0900 Hours

We have been given orders to hold smolinsk at all costs. If the Germans take smolinsk they will only be 400 miles or so from Moskow. We are actually supposed to fight a very heavy delaying action and inflict as many casualties and damage as much equipment as we can. We have set up a three company front covering our whole secter from map edge to map edge. Supply had no mines for us so we must do with what we have. Our engineers will lay all that they had with them.

Estonia is very beautiful this time of the year. The trees are still in full bloom and give us cover from the heat and the Germans as they approach. Rations have been given out early and every one had a good hot breakfast. The weather is clear and visability is about 1250 good sight for our guns to say the least.

HQ has been very generous with supply as well, we have plenty of ammo to deal heavy retribution to the German scum who have invaded our Mother land. Also Hq has put on loan to us a generous supply of big guns in the way of 4 152mm batt. plus 9 122mm as well and 4 batt of rockets. This should put a dent in there armor today. Plus our Air Force even had some planes sitting around doing nothing today and they have been put on call by our commanders as well. We will have at our beck and call 6 of the old WWI biplanes plus 2 PE2 bombers and 3 of the newer lagg 3 fighters.

No man land has been sighted in and we await the arrival of our hated enemys. Already only 9:05 and a few of there 251 cars have appeared across the other side of no mans Land. Have called in a sec of planes to see if they can chase the pesky buggers away. Looks like this war is about to start once again. Will get to you once again as soon as there is a lull in the battle with the latest news.

Well we are still holding and dealing out a lot of damage after a half hour of continous fighting. Our losses are very slight considering that at least 4 companys of tanks have been hitting our lines from almost the get go. So far we have held them off and inflicted heavy losses to there side. The Germans have lost at least 15 of the 251 type armored car and at least as many if not more heavy tanks. There losses in infantry has to be running very near if not over a thousand lives lost so far.

They continue to send the heavy stuff at our north flank and the rest in the middle. Very little activity in the south so far. A co in the north has been bearing just about all of the attack.

Our lossses are slight as i said before. We have lost 1 spaa unit and 2 t-28 tanks and 2 t-35 tanks so far. Couple of there bombers came over about 15 minutes ago and took out 2 squads of the 3rd plattoon of C co in the middle.

The men are still in good spirits and we alll vow to hold here or die trying. So far no infantry has reached our front line as yet. A couple of there tanks got as far as about 400 yds from our line but were takin out before doing any damage to us.

There 81 morters have been pounding the crap out of us, no damage from them just make you not want to raise your head up out of your fox hole too much. Makes it hard to really get any shots off. But our big guns I assume have been doining the same to them if not more so.

Can you get some recon out to find those 81mm mortars? Should be able to estimate their distance by smoke or sound. Lay some arty on them if you can.

The Germans are retreating after only 50 minutes of bitter conflict. They are running and leaving a lot of there dead and ripped apart armor laying on the battle field. We have counted 1540 of there dead so far. Plus the burning and split apart hulks of there tanks. 107 burnt out hulks are strewn all over the battle field. Have also counted 26 of there armored cars laying around. All in all a very good day for our side I would say.

High command should be very proud of what we have done here today. We have inflicted heavy losses on the enemy while stopping them cold in there tracks. Our losses where low in a battle of such magnitude. We lost 177 good men with 7 of our tanks and 2 planes as well as 5 arty.

At least we have given Moscow some more time to prepare. I am recommending our gunners at least a few medals today. They were the ones who stopped the mighty German armor today. Only two tanks ever made it as far as our front lines. All the rest were stopped at least 400 yards from our lines.

Our orders are to pack up and move to Uman and set up defenses there. Uman is about 700 miles almost due south of us here in the Ukraine. The germans are mounting an offensive there in August.

If that had happened historically, WW2 would have ended in 1942.  Most probably the good, hot breakfast is what won the fight for the russians.
