It's Dec 1942 and I have 112 research points (rate) for the Oscar II. As this plane is due Jan 43 why isn't the plane available now considering the manual says that for every 100 reseach pts the plane will be advanced 1 month?

For every 100 research points, there's a die roll to see if they arrive a month early.  Apparently, the die roll gets more effective the closer it occurrs to the historical arrival date.

Aircraft not yet available with a production capacity will cause research and may move up the
availability of the new aircraft type. Whenever a plane would have been produced, 1
development point is gained by the new aircraft type. For every 100 development points the
availability of the aircraft type will be moved up one month.

Straight from the manual no mention of a die roll although the first sentence says 'may' while the last say 'will'.

Who was responsible for writing the manaul anyway there's so much missed out, incorrect or contradictory it would have been better if it had never been writen.

Does the die roll happen every day?

Nobody knows that...

but if you want to see your ac three months earlier you should expand your r&d to 300, at least. Then you can hope for good results, but there is no guarantee...

Of course, that's works for WiTP, i'm not sure how it will be modeled in AE [:D][:D][:D]

Hi,

regarding aircraft research I belive the quote below my be of interest.
Aircraft Factories
  • Factories that produce fighters, bombers, and other planes used in war.
  • If game date is equal or greater than Date of Availability of aircraft that's produced, factory produces aircraft and places them in Aircraft Replacement Pool, if not - factory is researching aircraft.
  • Repairing of factories for aircrafts already in production (see above) goes as expected: 1 factory element is repaired every day at a cost of 1000 supply points (assuming 10000 or more supplies available at base). However for aircrafts in reserch probability of repairing of factory element depends on number of days till aircraft enters production and total factory size (sum of ready and disabled elements): If RANDOM(0 .. NumberOfDaysTillInProduction) > SizeOfFactory then factory element will not be repaired that day.
  • Number of factories in Base - monthly (not daily!) production rate.
  • For factories to work, there must be number of engines mounted on a plane * 18 HI + enough engines in pool per every plane built.
  • Each month, AC factories:
    • produce number of factories + random(1-30), rounded down,
    • consume engines needed + 18 HI per engine, per every plane built.
  • If Factory is assigned to produce aircraft not yet available - it's considered Researching that aircraft by building its prototypes.
    • To be able to build prototypes factory must be fully repaired itself - must have no disabled elements. Please note remarks above about factory repairing.
    • Research does not consume neither HI points nor engines.
    • Research speed: for every 100 plane prototypes built date of availability is moved up by 1 month.
    • Prototype build rate is much slower then build rate of production aircrafts:
      • Large factories are much less effective: even factory of size 320 once ready will build only slightly more then 1 prototype a day (about 35 prototypes per month). Such factories also cost a lot of supplies before they get ready for researching.
      • Very small factories are cheap but not very efficient either: factory of size 2 will build on averange only about 3 prototypes per month. Also it is likely that it will take lot of time till these two factory elements get repaired before such factory can start research of aircraft with availability date far in the future (on averange it will take as long as waiting for repairing of big factory of size 320 - unless you get lucky with dice rolls)
      • My personal choise/advice would be: concentrate research on 1-2 aircraft types and use factories of size 30+. Single factory of size 30+, once ready will deliver steady stream of 30 prototypes per month. Build as many of such factories as needed to achive desired speed-up but remember that they need first spend time to fully repair themselfs.

It comes from War in the Pacific User Community Project. I extended lately text about Aircraft Factories adding all I know (well, I believe that I know [:'(] ) about aircraft researching. The info gathered comes from peeking into the code plus some (limited must admit) testing. For what it's worth... In any case any comments or corrections would be appreciated.

Regards..

You researched the Oscar II [X(] [:D]

It will most likely be accelerated any day now, just go ahead and play.
You don't always get the ac a full month before, but usually within 3-4 weeks in my experience.

I did, seem like the thing to do at the time but I won't in future. However on the same subject I also researched the Jack and I got this early cannot remember the date exactly but I got it sometime in Jan 43 over a much early.

If you talk about stock senario with OscarII factory of size 119 then you have/had still few elements disabled in that factory. As long as factory is not fully repaired no prototypes (or no development points if you prefer that term) are generated at all. Unfortunately there is no place in game interface where you can see actual number of prototypes/dev. pts built.

Regarding Jack for stock scenario if you use a single factory of size 19 or just extend it to size 38 I would still expect only a month of speed-up. From what you say you manage to got 2nd month (though the second 100 come so late it only save you the part of very last month). This means that either you got quite lucky on die rolls (not very likely must admit) or I'm plain wrong on my assumptions described above. Or... Or maybe you got build second factory for Jacks during their research period?

Anyway who cares what some bonzo newbe like me is talking about? [8|]
