Harpoon or Harpoon?

Hi guys
I'm considering buying Harpoon (used to play it a lot back in the 90's), but I'm frankly confused about the difference(s) between Advanced Warfare and Commanders Edition? Which one should I buy?

If I would say: buy HCE, The lads that admire ANW would be very sad, after all, I always promoted H3/ANW [:D]
If I would say: buy Harpoon ANW, I must consider a hostile situation when I visit Harpgamer IRCC chat [:D]
So, I would advise you to buy both!!!![;)]

If the combo pack is still available bor purchase, I'd go that way. Get both games as each has its own strengths and weaknesses.

HCE all the way. ANW is by far the inferior product.

Oh man Terminus, take it easy on the poor moderators! I don't think that topic is ready for humor [:-].

HCE has the easier interface to deal with of the two. There is also a little less micromanagement too, for the most part. I also thing it's easier on the eyes.
ANW has a little more detail to it. It's also the only one with multiplayer. The clunky interface annoys me quite a bit (having to repeatedly click close on a window before it'll leave for example).

I wouldn't see it that way.
HCE and ANW are 2 different games, and both games have their + and -
I play both games for many years with a lot of fun, frustrations, etcetera, etcetera.
Both games are under construction and lots of problems must be solved [bugs], but it is rather shortthinking to use a word like "inferior"
It is just what you like to play.
You have ANW-MP installed? I hereby invite you to play against me to show you that ANW is a challenge.
HC does not offer a Multi-player. I [as H3 fanatic] hate the Windows screens, hate the limitations of the number of maps I can use, I even do not like the Officers face that appears with every new message, or the commands [par example, these boaring mirrors you have to walk through "are you really sure you want to do change course?" etc. etc.].
HC includes very challenging battlesets and scenarios, for me one of the main reasons to play HC[E].
As H3 player, I hope that that ANW will improve, and will be less buggy than as it is now.
But I never would classify one of the two games "inferior".
Cheers for now[:D]

Based on this, I'll buy Advanced Naval Warfare. Thanks for your advice, gents.

I'm not being humorous in any way. ANW is buggy, the UI is very poorly designed, and you command individual ships rather than task forces. HCE is rock-solid, easy to use, and much nicer to look at.
ANW is inferior to HCE.

Actually, controlling task forces in ANW is pretty much the same as HCE except ANW has more options as to threat vectors & keeps the formation aligned to the axis of advance. So, in many ways, ANW is better at group control.
However, I still prefer HCE. He'll be back to get it sometime.[:)]

Try the Demos for each , then buy the one you like. Personally I bought BOTH.

Where can I get the demos? This USNI Gouge Project is done for now, right?

Right, there is a lull in the USNI ANW demo. Your only demo choice for HC is a
much older version,
http://www.harpoonpages.com/harpoon1.htm
There are videos available of gameplay in both games (do some searching around this forum) if that helps at all, and of course countless screenshots.

I actually bought both, have been playing them for a couple of days now.
ANW: Jeez, that interface... what can I say, hehe

CE: better looking, but seems to lack a lot of advanced options.
Since I'm a sucker for realism, I'm playing ANW for now. The
gameplay (once you get past the interface) is awesome.

I have always been a big fan of H3/ANW. Just bought HCE. I haven't played H3/ANW in probably four months. Mostly due to bugs, but also due just to the caustic nature of the community. I can never figure out which database to use, if its a database issue causing a problem, or if its a bug. HCE is much simpler, not just the game, but community. As far as advanced features go, I find many of them not working, or not working consistently (i.e., replenshiment). I find the advanced features causing more problems and not really providing much more gaming pleasure.
Until they finally can finally calm down over there, I am sticking with HCE.
