OK. I think I have a handle on creating RCS (using the HC Radar RCS v6 spreadsheet), but having some difficulties with the BSL for ships and torpedos. Is there a general rule, like Frigate size ships usually have say BSL 42 and Destroyer sized ships 44, etc? I would assume nuclear powered ships have a 1 or 2 point reduction in their BSL and maybe Diesel power an increas of 1 or 2 points, etc. What is the standard BSL range for torpedoes (46 - 56)?? I would think electric powered torps would be a bit quieter than say turbine powered and be at the lower end of whatever scale. I think BSL is kind of subjective to the database editor, but can some of the experienced editors give some general boundaries?

Oh, I forgot submarine BSLs! What would be BSL range for you average nuke and range for your avergae diesel? A little insight from those who have a better understanding of how the HC sonar model works would be helpful to us junior database junkies out here!

I'd recommend that you use a similar approach to what is employed for RCS. Find your range of values and break it down into groups. Determining an appropriate BSL for each individual weapon system is the tough part. Harpoon 4.1 is helpful in this respect because it assigns certain torpedoes a "Quiet" rating.

Ok. Seems there isn't a spreadsheet of any kind the for RCS. What exactly does the BSL do? For example, a sensor has a passive range of 5nms. What would a ship with a BSL value of say 42 do to that range? Would a BSL 42 improve or reduce the standard 5 miles? Some insight into how the system uses the BSL to impact the stated passive range of a sensor may be helpful.

40 - Small Ship
42 - Medium Ship
44 - Big Ship
46 - Large Ship
48 - VLarge Ship
Those are the BSLs assigned to the various ship sizes in pre-EC2003 battlesets.
 
Subs in that regime start at 28 and go up to 42
 
Torpedoes cruising around are 46-48
 
Active Sonar is 90-92 (wow!)
 
The BSL for cases where the target noise level is unknown is 40 (aka noisy sub) so that is rougly what you'll see in the active unit display.
