Hey all,
I did some web searching and found this helpful article regarding how to :
1. GET real world height data
2. Convert that data to a BMP
3. Use BMP in Blender
From Blender you could probably create a mesh ... from there, well Stridor has explained it several times.
ALL FOR FREE!!!

Also, you could probable use this program called
Height Map Editor which can edit a BMP or randomly create a BMP for use in Blender. Also a free program.

Hope this helps!!!

This is very good - Thanks Mraah.
I know Stridor mentioned Blender, I hope he'll have time now to do step by step tutorial on map making.
(although - I'm not in too much of a hurry - I still have to win in the boot camp campaign.).
Thanks Mraah,
Rick

Rick,
Yeah, I'm not in too much of a hurry either.
Apparently the author of the article wanted to build a 3D golf course. It appears he was happy enough with the height data to build the course. I can only image the detail in a 1kmx1km map for PC.
We'll have to wait and see. We have enough maps as it is, but it's nice to know that perhaps building our own map from real world data is a possiblity, and maybe not as hard ... I dunno.[:)]

Oh, I forgot to elaborate on the Height Map Editor program.
You'll remember one of it's features ... Generate a random terrain.
Interesting ... perhaps the idea could be usefull [&:].

Guys I will get around to the full map making tutorial when I get a chance!
I did briefly have a look at blender, but its directx export didn't work with PCK [:@]
So my tut will probably use Milkshape which is way way easier to use than Blender and works fine with PCK. Any "world builder" program which can make a height map bmp can also be used in Milkshape, or you can just do all the landscaping in Milkshape if you want.
I will get to it.
For those of you who want to mod maps I suggest you start with scenedit (make a backup of the map first - make a brand new map) and learn how to move and add stuff, change textures, etc. That should keep you busy for a while [;)]

Have to say I'm enjoying the game as is. But I also can't wait to try making some maps of my own.
