For faster turns vs. AI

Would it be possible (or would it speed up the combat turn speed rate) to eliminate the text for the AI's moves. I'm assuming that the time it takes the AI to do it's moves is slowed down because of the need to show the messages.
Also, eliminate the messages and visuals for "Unit z is moving to hex x,y" for friendly unit movement vs. AI. You don't see it in PBEM game (for obvious reasons), why do you need it for games vs. the AI.

The time taken to put messages on the screen is tiny compared to all the silent number crunching going on. If you have the message delay over 0.1 second, there may be some delays because the game may sometimes pause before putting up the next message. However, with minimum message delay, it's not going to make much difference.

The first year of game time may take a while during the time it takes to click the complete turn button to the next turn but since then the game is pretty snappy, less than 2 minutes to complete now.
Maybe it's time to upgrade your PC.[;)]

If you hit the escape key after clicking the "end turn" button, the game will not post all the less importatn text messages until the first combat occurs. Try using that and your turn will speed up quite a bit. Since you are playing against the AI, you don't have to worry about this causing synch problems.

D'oh!! I just started playing an AI game (for lack of anything better to do). I haven't played the AI for a loooooong time. I had discovered the "escape key" when I had played the AI before, but had forgot all about it since it is considered a no-no for Pbem games. Thanks Brad.[&o]

So hitting the ESC key turns off all the non-combat related messages? Does that mean I won't have to endure all those multiple recon flight messages over China after that?

It won't elimnate them, but it bypasses the delay times until the next combat.

I recently discovered (1.806) you can hit any key, not only the ESC key to speed up the display of messages.
Not sure (I don't play PBEM) how this would effect PBEM games.

Are you sure about pressing any key? I find pressing Escape skips through multiple low-priority messages until an important message is displayed, whereas pressing space dismisses the current message but does not skip the subsequent messages. Since I like watching naval combat, I often press Escape to quickly run through the early messages, then space as the night flying messages appear, to quickly skip to any surface combat that might occur.
I have not tried pressing other keys.

Did no systematic testing.
Only found that hitting any alphanumerical key (on the main part of the keyboard /don't know about the numeric part) had the same effect as hitting ESC.
Just try it with, say, the g key and you will know what I mean.
Your observation about the space key is quite interesting. I'll try that too.
Again, playing only AI I don't bother too much, never saw any side effects by using the ESC key. Just thought that PBEM players may find this helpful.
