Is there any limit to ammo? If so where is it listed? I thought the manual said something about it, but playing the game I see nothing.

Ammo is limited, but it's not reported to you regularly in terms of shell counts. At your command level, you are informed when a unit runs out of a particular ammo type (and it will then no longer show up in that unit's possible ammo list). Rare types like APCR or HEAT will run out much more quickly than common types like AP or HE.

Does that go for small arms ammo as well?

Yes, but it's extremely rare - infantry units will almost never run out of ammo within the realistic length of most scenarios.

For the first time, I think, I had units run out of ammo in a scenario. In return Road to Kharkov, I had one of my Pz III's run out of APCR the very order phase. Then later in that same battle, One of my HT251's ran out of 7.2mm MG ammo.

The game gives a message in the message panel - I think it blue font, if I recall. Then when you go to select the target --> weapon --> it no longer shows the ammo that ran out.
