I'm wanting a game like this. Should I buy COTA or just wait and get BFTB?

Well, if you can only get one of those, then to wait for BFTB would be the choice due to its improvements.
If you want the best operational game on the market right now, then you should buy CotA. It seems the best choice is to buy both-that's what many of us will do.

Because you'll prefer the setting of BFTB ?

BFTB improves over COTA but not dramatically.
You can have a view on the improvements of BFTB over COTA here.

COTA scenario won't be backported to BFTB, for sure.
COTA is available now and is a very stable product.

Don't wait....... get COTA now!! Great scenarios in an interesting (and heretofore almost ignored) historical setting. There's even 2 bonus North African scenarios that are a delight to play. Sure BFTB will be an improved version of the engine but COTA is top notch in it's own right. Kind of like buying electronics.... you can keep waiting for the next evolutions but at some point you have to take the plunge. [;)]
It's a great game and I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

Two great games are better than one. I've just bought COTA and I'm enjoying it and looking forward to the next one too.
