Naming conventions

I was looking at how unit names are displayed. I'm talking about the names given to units in the Name field of the Editor, not the unit type.

I thought the name length was limited but rather, I see that the name can be pretty long (I typed up to 30 characters and the name actually overflowed the display when the /x squad id was added.

However, if you put a comman in the name, the display truncates the name at the comma. I discovered this when it appeared I had two identical units on the map in the Balta scenario.

So this thread is for two purposes.:

1. probably should have the editor limit length of name to 28 chars or there about (or at least truncate at that point in the game display), I'm not as concerned about the comma issue but it should be documented, or footnoted on screen - something (it might actually be handy to have a way to annothate a unit in the editor without it displaying in the game.

2. What is the proper naming convention to use --

I recall one of the first section in old gmaes was a section where each component of the name was explained - granted most of the folks here probably know this stuff, - but some of us, and maybe some new playeers to wargames might not.

PC:K put a "/#" to identify the subordinate squad or vehicle number, so that leaves the rest of the name for designers

So what is the preferrred way to label the unit:

2nd Platoon, Company A, 3rd Bn, 231st Regiment, 115th Div,

At this level of a game, a number of the identifiers arent needed, but what should be there?

Thanks,
Rick

[platoon#]/[company#]/[batl.#]/[regiment] /[squad#] No division or higher.

So for a German unit, 1./1./II./64.Infanterie-Rgt. /2

Yes, I'd say what Capitaine said - and generally abbreviating is best because you want the unit name plus any relevant events to fit in the event list box.
