I think it's because of the dangers of private search for wartime relics why it's restricted in Germany. I mean you cant take a metal detector and go into Huertgenwald or to the Seelow Heights in search of artefacts out of the blue here, at least not legally

Ok, at least thats what the authorities claim, because non-proffessional 'relic hunters' in many cases have destroyed the site before real archeological excavations could have been made

When I was trained as an EOD 55 delta in 1983, we were told that only one item of FOF-era ordnance might still pose a danger and that was some type of grenade, don't recall the nomenclature. I've seen people making fun of this poor guy on several forums. I wouldn't have been any more careful. Who would think?
