Remember the HQ Helper and the "Easy" difficulty option! If you need to restart, try one of the higher replacement levels. If you went for "historical" right of the bat, it can be pretty tough for a new player.

I chose easy and copious reinforcements and I'm getting creamed by those BM-10's (which I have never seen before) not even T-34's. It's crazy I tell you![:D]

I am sad to say this but I am doing as well as the historical 1st panzer division. I've lost so many panzer III's and IV's it's getting impossible to continue!

I am playing the the long 1st Panzer campaign too. Long range is your friend and infantry are cheaper/easier to replace. I am on the 9th battle and have lost:

- both recon halftracks (one to AT fire, the other in the first moment of a battle as a Soviet 120mm barrage nailed it)
- two Pz-IIIg (one to a KV-1, the other to 120mm artillery)
- two Sdkfz-251 (can't remember how, most likely 45mm ATG)
- two rifle squads (since replaced via the HQ helper)

By pushing infantry and recon assets forward, you get good intelligence without sacrificing your armour early on. 45mm ATGs can be taken out quite easily once spotted and they are probably the biggest 'hidden' threat. I may have got luckier than you as I have only encountered two KV-1s and three T-34s so far - I reckon my armour losses would be higher otherwise. My kampfgruppe is still operational but I am need to be quite cautious with my armour.

As an aside, I have received no points for replacements/upgrades despite a string of legendary victories and knight's crosses.

What month/year are you at now?

You'll have to make it through the Winter of '41 and Spring of '42 before you get a lot of replacements if you're playing on Historical - and there should be some pretty tough battles along the way. However, it will be worth it! I won't spoil the exact date or the replacements/upgrades, but it's definitely worth waiting/fighting for.

November '41 at the moment. As the Soviet formations I am currently encountering are infantry-heavy or stacked with T-26s, I hope to make it through the winter with my panzers mostly intact. A few more general observations:

- when available, my Stukas have been effective
- Soviet first turn artillery is lethally accurate
- 75mm HEAT is your friend so look after those Pz-IVs [;)]
- on the subject of Pz-IVs, direct fire smoke in front of enemy armour will sometimes cause them to advance through it - in the interim you can setup an ambush
- even with my limited numbers of infantry in this campaign, infantry combat is far more immersive and enjoyable than in Winterstorm

Yep - as you get into 1942 those T-26s will start becoming less and less common (I'm sure you've done a good job reducing their numbers yourself!) and T-34s will start to be quite common.

Great tip. Tactical smoke in general (and using it to set flank/rear ambushes from close range) is the best way to deal with some of that heavy Soviet armor, especially on the more open maps.
