Thoughts on Hi-Res vs. Low-Res skins.

Hi All,

I have been making some skin mods. They are all low res ( 512x512 ). I have done one Hi-Res mod (1012 x 1012 ) and upon comparing it with the low res model could not see so much difference as to make the change very desirable.

It really is not any more work to make Hi-Res. However, if I think about resource consumption versus increase in model quality it does not appear a worthwhile trade off.

Regards John

Z1812,

I was wondering about hi-rez ... thatnks for checking.

Also, for my M4A2, I was going to use a 512x512 and then use a low res (256x256) which would actually be a resized 512x512.

Have you played with a 256x256 at all? I'm curoius if it's any different from a 512x512 ... or perhaps an FPS check would determine that?

Thanks,
Rob

EDIT NOTE : When you use a 1024x1024 was it just a 512x512 resized or did you start with a fresh 1024x1024 ?

You guys should always start from a highres crisp 1024x1024 map. Then rescale it down to 512x512, if you want to provide the model with a "default sized" texture map.

Forget about 256x256, they are way too small for the main close up texture and look too washed out.

Hi Marc,

I am not starting from scratch so I use the 510x510dds supplied and then resample it to 1024x1024. I suppose that is why the quality does not seem so different.

Hi Mraah,

Marc has answered your question re: 256x256. In terms of your model, as Marc says, better to compose in 1024 and then resize to 512.

Regards John

Yes, that'll do it.

ok ... that's what I was thinking ... start high then resize to low.

You saved me a bunch of testing when it comes to textures !!

Thanks all!

When you paint in extreme tiny details and masks just keep in mind that pixels get halfed when you downsize [;)]

You might want to give the resized texture a sharpening pass too and repaint little oddities.
