TORONTO —

Peter MacKay will be looking to provide a different kind of defence Monday.

The 42-year-old defence minister, a native of New Glasgow, N.S., is slated to make an appearance for the Nova Scotia Keltics in a Rugby Canada Super League game Monday against the Niagara Thunder in Brantford.

"He can play — and still plays and is registered with Pictou Country rugby club," Keltics coach Troy Meyers was quoted on rugbycanada.ca.

"We will put him at inside centre for about 20 minutes and see how that goes, but he should do fine."

MacKay played rugby a decade ago with recently retired Canadian captain Morgan Williams. The two will be reunited Monday.

The match is the first of the season for the Keltics. The Thunder drew 23-23 with the Quebec Caribou in their season opener last weekend.

The Rugby Canada Super League is the highest level of club rugby in the country, featuring regional teams drawn from provincial clubs.
