strange aircraft upgrade path

I am playing a stock PBEM game, scenario 15, v1.806, PDU off. I have one squadron of buffaloes that upgrade to....Dakota I!!! Why would a fighter squadron upgrade to transport. It is the infamous 243 Squadron. Is this the first instance of a gunship? Will it be armed with quad 40 mm's?
I would also note that to add pilots, one only gets to add them one at a time; if there are more than one to be added to a squadron, one doesn't get the opportunity to add them all at once if there are more than one. My opponent assures me he is v1.806. I know this was changed in one of the patches. I wonder if these two are related or coincident? Any thoughts?

243 squadron was destroyed in the Malaya campaign and reformed as a transport squadron. The upgrade path is historically accurate.
As for the multiple pilots issue, that functionality was added 17 months ago, in patch 1.801. Are you sure you have "Accept Replacements" on.

I have accept replacements on. I thought that was for airplanes. Not pilots. This is the only game it shows up in. I did ask my opponent if he had upgraded and he assured me he had.

Yes - the accept replacements should be for planes... you manually add pilots - if there are X planes without pilots, there should be 2 buttons: one says "Add a pilot" and the other (to the right) should say "Add X pilots" - where X is the number of planes without pilots.
BOTH of you must have the same version of the game... if they are different, bad things will happen (i.e. - REPLAY/SYNC bugs). If one person upgrades, the other must as well.

Kyberbill,
The Commonwealth squadrons do not have a direct type relationship such as occures in the USAAF.
In the USAAF, 555 Fighter Sqn is a fighter sqn.
In the RAF (RAAF,RNZAF etc) 5 Sqn could change from fighter to dive bomber to heavy bomber. It isnt common but does occur. You will find a couple in WITP CHS which have an option to become Dakota Sns.
