From a fresh install

Which patches do I need and in what order?

I believe that you will be okay with:

then:

Herman is correct. The 'update' patches will upgrade any installation from 3.7 to 3.9. The 3.9.x hot fix patches will only upgrade 3.9.0.

If I were you, pad152, I would install 3.8 first, then upgrade to 3.92 and finally 3.93. You know if you only install 3.92, you will not got the new "subpic.res"(which is about 9MB) in your \resource folder. I don't know why the 3.92 patch does update the shippic.res and planepic.res but leave the subpic.res. But if you first apply the 3.8 patch, you will get it. I know many of the players here like the brand new color platform pictures, but I still enjoy the old and original one which are MUCH MORE SMALLER in size, for the new color pic will cost you about 300MB on your hard drive, and with many platforms have no photo.

Herman, when I click on the links to the patches you reccommend, I simply get an 'address is not valid' message.
 
The same thing happens on the Matrix website. Are there any other sources for the patches.

That's very odd. That's the Official Matrix ftp site.  I just clicked on those links and they work for me.  Perhaps your browser is preventing you from ftp access?

You can try out "The Scrolls" patch site.

Thanks Herman. I've managed to download 3.9.3 from Filefront. I still can't download from Matrix. Which browser settings should I change? [&:]

I'm no expert with the various browsers.  I just think that I've seen different results when using IE and Firefox.  I just checked at The Scrolls and all the patches you need can be found there.

All patches downloaded and installed. The games certainly looks different. I'm just trying to remember how to play it!!

Oops, I forgot to mention.  You really should install the:

Complete Harpoon ANW Library

and run the tutorials with the PlayersDB instead of the ones that come from Matrix.  You will experience far fewer problems, guaranteed.
