RHS Test 10C: EBO vs Chicken of the Sea

This is a thread for a game using the new submarine and ASW values introduced with 7.8 and 7.9 updates. There are also revised load values for land unit devices introduced by 7.91. It is intended to be a long test - and to be complimentary to test 10B vs OSO - in which I play the Allies with the help of several advisors. In this game - which has an identical start with 10A - I am playing the Japanese -
and will attempt a full scale Japanese autarky - siezing the Central Pacific area to keep the USN out of the vital areas (and to have a bargaining chip for end of war negotiations) - and siezing both the SRA and adjacent areas (Ceylon, Northern Australia, NE India) to prevent enemy bombers from destroying everything too soon. We also intend to drive the Russians back to Lake Baikal - both to gain resources and industry - and to forsall a serious offensive from their nearby base complexes. A full plate as it were.

The night first turn began with an attack by Ro-34 at Olongapo/Bataan. Both the submarine and the 4 destroyers encountered failed to do any damage to each other. In EBO the historical plan that Ro-34 be the basis of wartime mass production was implemented - so there are a large series of submarines of this class - the most maneuverable of all Japanese submarines - and the epitome of Japanese attack design before the war. They were replaced by a very similar wartime class which had oxygen torpedoes. The Type 92 torpedoes of Ro-34 are more limited in range and performance than the Type 95 Long Lange of wartime boats - and the class cannot use them because it does not have oxygen generating gear for them. RHS uses "effective range" = half of maximum range at the highest speed setting: Type 92 has a range = 4 and accuracy = 30; Type 95 has a range = 5 and an accuracy = 51. The Type 92 effect = 661 while Type 95 = 893. Apparently accuracy is related to speed for torpedoes.
The second event of the night was the same Ro-34 attacking an AK - and scoring 3 hits. The Type 92 can get the job done. AK Anshun sank shortly thereafter.
Surprisingly nothing else happened during the night. This was a surprising first turn in several respects.

The first day turn began with 9 Ki-48s attacking Hong Kong. 1 Walrus was destroyed on the ground and six other hits were scored, with no damage to the aircraft - which came in at 5000 feet (just above effective machine gun cielings). Later in the day 17 Ki-27s attacked - without effect.
Next 9 Army Kates (called Ki-47s in RHSEBO) raided Victoria Point - hoping to catch ships in harbor - but they had left. Only one port hit was scored - for no damage to the planes. These planes operated out of Cambodia, Indochina.
Next, 51 Ki-48s and 12 Ju-88s - escorted by 11 Zeros - and in company with a Ki-46 recon plane - raided Kota Bahru - hoping to catch planes on the ground - and otherwise take down its well developed airfield - which is close to the Japanese landing site of Singora Thailand. No planes were present - on the ground or in the air - but 167 casualties were inflicted, 1 gun was lost, 4 vehicles were lost, and 42 other hits were scored - for no damage to the attackers - which is surprising - implying no AA opposition - and the withdrawall of the air base support unit. I do not attack Kota from the sea - but land in port and march overland from Singora - which results in a faster conquest with fewer casualties. It is also a typical Japanese operational technique - KB IRL being the only case of a significant opposed landing attempted by Japan.
Shortly thereafter 64 Ki-21 Sallys - escorted by 14 Zeros - raided Singapore - at the other end of Malaya. They were met by 10 Buffalos - which seems modest. 5 Sallys were destroyed - two of those by Buffalos penetrating the escort - and 15 were damaged - but no fighters were hurt at all. 11 Buffalos were destroyed (presumably 1 on the ground) and 6 bombers or patrol planes were also destroyed on the ground. 66 other hits were scored, but no casualties, guns lost or vehicles lost were suffered. Both JAAF bomber units were seriously demoralized by the raid, but the fighters were not.
Next 100 Bettys and Nells raided Clark. Escorted by 90 Zeros - they were also accompanied by 7 Ki-46 recon planes. No Allied planes were encountered in the air and only 5 destroyed on the ground. There were 92 casualties, 3 guns and 2 vehicles lost. There were 38 airbase hits, 14 airbase supply hits and 240 runway hits - almost certainly taking down this well developed airfield.
Next - strangely - only 1 of 18 Ki-49s assigned attacked Wake Island. Met - equally strangely - by a single Buffalo - nobody did any damage to anything - and everyone went home OK.
Next two JAAF air strikes on the ROC 57th Field Army caused 2 and 29 casualties. 2 other air strikes on the 50th Guerilla Regiment caused 1 and 8 casualties. Another air strike on the Miscelaneous Northern Factions 13th Field Army caused 46 casualties and 1 gun lost. Yet another on the 29th Field Army caused 29 casualties and 1 gun lost. 2 more on the Red 15th Guerilla regiment caused 39 and 12 casualties and 2 guns lost in the first raid. 2 more on the 68th Field Army caused 41 casualties and 2 guns lost, and 173 casualties plus one gun lost, respectively. Finally, in China, an air strike on the Hopei Militia Regiment caused 45 casualties and 2 guns lost.
Naval air strikes began with 15 Ki-48s putting 1 small bomb in PG Tutuila at sea. Then 15 Kates - probably from the CVE force near Legaspi - put 2 bombs in PG Isabel - right in Manila Bay - in spite of no escort and 8 P-40Es on CAP. No Kates were damaged. The CVL force - near Johnston Island - attacked a surface action group to the SE of it which included CA Indianapolis - with 61 torpedo bombers escorted by 32 Me-109s. Surprisingly NO hits were scored, 3 Kates were lost, 14 others were damaged, and the engaging bomber squadrons were significantly demoralized. It is unclear why this happened?

Next, 51 Ki-48s and 12 Ju-88s - escorted by 11 Zeros - and in company with a Ki-46 recon plane - raided Kota Bahru - hoping to catch planes on the ground - and otherwise take down its well developed airfield - which is close to the Japanese landing site of Singora Thailand. Next - strangely - only 1 of 18 Ki-49s assigned attacked Wake Island. Met - equally strangely - by a single Buffalo - nobody did any damage to anything - and everyone went home OK. Later in the day 1 Ki-49 repeated this performance - except it met 7 Buffalos - but still no damage to either side.
Next 11 Kates and 21 Ki-36s put 18 bombs into PG Wake and PG Peteral - at sea SW of Shanghai. Peteral probably sank from the sheer weight of the bombs - never mind damage caused when they exploded (16 hits).
Later 14 Bettys attacked Amboina, were met by a single Buffalo, and caused 12 hits, for 1 plane lost and 1 damaged. Later still 14 Kates attacked Guam (from Saipan) - causing 9 casualties and 2 hits.
Later came the first air strike on Pearl Harbor of the war: very different from history, never mind EOS family air strikes, this was by 25 unescorted Kates - an attack on air bases (never mind orders were for PORT attacks). No less than 22 were lost - although 10 enemy planes were destroyed on the ground or in the air. 21 enemy fighters of 2 types were flying CAP. 7 other hits were scored - and PH airfields no doubt are almost fully operational. This was a very strange and surprising attack.
Next 17 Bettys out of Maleolap attacked Johnston Island - encountered no opposition - and caused 3 hits.
Not to be outdone in the unescorted significant air strike department, the Allies launched 49 bombers of 5 types out of PH vs the Kiddo Butai itself. Met by 56 Zeros and 6 Petes, 37 were lost to fighters and AAA. Some penetrated the CAP to attack 3 carriers and BB Haruna, but no hits were scored. Surprisingly 4 Zeros were destroyed and 6 damaged by the bombers (some of which were B-17s). This was a day for strange and confused air battles. A follow up attack by 2 Bolos resulted in 1 Bolo lost - and 2 Zeros damaged.
Next 5 B-17s attacked CA Furutaka at Jolo. Covered by 4 Petes, 1 of these was lost damaging 1 B-17. No hits were scored. A similar attack then happened at Legaspi when 9 B-17s came in on BB Nagato and BB Yamat0. These were covered by 2 Petes and a pre production Rufe.
2 B-17s were lost and 3 damaged vs the lone Rufe got hurt engaging a B-17 (no big surprise there) - and no hits were scored again.
ANY fighter opposition reduces the chances of a hit. Also - in both attacks the B-17s came in too high - at both 12000 and 15000 feet - where the hit chances are too low (but no risk of light or MG AA damage).
Then 13 A-20s and 2 B-23s attacked transports with valuable support units at sea in the KB hex. Met by 52 Zeros and 6 Petes, 5 bombers were lost. In spite of penetrating the CAP - no hits were scored on AP Horuiku Maru. 3 Zeros were damaged.

Next 5 B-10s escorted by 3 Buffalos came in on CA Nachi at Kuching. Covered by 2 Petes, no planes were lost or damaged nor were any hits scored. One reason is the planes came in at 10,000 feet - the Petes were down at 6,000 feet and could not reach them. This was too high to score hits reliabily - but also too high for AAMG to do any damage to the planes. This attack was then duplicated by 6 Blenheims and 2 Vildebeestes - met by the same 2 Petes - again with no damage or losses. Again the altitude of the bombers was 10,000 feet. Later still, 10 Vildebeestes came in - and were met by the same 2 Petes - but this time they managed to set 1 of the 2 APs attacked on fire with a single bomb hit. No Allied planes were lost or even damaged.

Next came a USMC/USN air strike by 17 SBD-3s and 4 F-4F3s on the main invasion TF at Lahaina. Met by 25 Zeros - four planes of each type were lost. Nevertheless - the bombers penetrated the CAP and scored 1 hit each on two APs (4 APs were attacked). Both ships were set on fire and one suffered heavy damage. For this day - this was good shooting for the Allies.
Three Vildebeestes came in on Takao Formosa - and were met by a surprising 34 Zeros (NONE of whom were ordered to fly CAP) - which shot all 3 down.
Later still 3 Hudsons came in on a TF near Kendari - and failed to do any damage to it. 3 other Hudsons - escorted by Buffalos this time - similarly failed to damage a lone AP at Sorong, New Guinea.
Then came a very strange attack at PH - vs a single PG (with all those capital ships still present). 21 Vals and 24 kates - escorted by 57 Zeros - put 1 bomb and 3 torpedoes (really?) into USS Sonoma. Met by 21 fighters of 2 types, fully 17 were shot down. This time no Japanese planes were lost or even damaged. But it is a very strange attack at PH for the opening day of the war!
Later the CVL force managed to get another strike aloft - only 4 Kates from one unit flew - but 27 Me-109s went along with them. These managed to put a torpedo into USS Robin - better than the massive air strike launched earlier did.
Then 10 Kates and 7 Jakes - with 4 Claude in escort - put 2 bombs into USS Penguin and 1 more into AO Robert L Barns - not far from Guam.
Next - somewhat ironically - AK Makassar - in the Makassar Strait - took 3 bombs from 9 Ki-51s operating out of Singora (with NO air support units present). These were escorted by Oscars too.
Then 6 Ki-48s and 36 Ki-51s out of Bako the Pescadores put 16 bombs into ML Redstart in the South China Sea. She no doubt sank - as a follow up attack by 14 Ki-48s found no target in the same location. Then 36 Kates - also out of Bako - put 10 bombs into PG Moth. These were probably Army type Ki-47s - which don't carry torpedoes.
Next 27 JAAF light bombers of 3 types put 11 bombs into PG Peterel (both already hit) and PG Wake in the East China Sea.
The CVL force then launched a third strike - 33 UNESCORTED Kates this time - and managed to put a torpedo into USS Indianapolis after all. 2 Kates were lost and 6 damaged - a better result than the first strike of the day by the same units.

Getting there. Look again.
However - since this game uses the same start turn as one you plan to play does - you should not be reading this thread - I suppose.

Is it the same? Well, I've not read it yet, luckily - but as I already played an EBO game against you, I'm afraid I'll know what to expect - while you have the same advantege vice versa.

Next came an ASW attack on I-155 near Darwin: the single unit of 2 MSW failed to hit the sub.
Then came daytime bombardments by Japanese surface action groups of Legaspi, Rabaul, Kuching - then landings at the same locations - plus Kampong Pfet - Nauru - Raeing - Wake - Johnston - Kavieng - Kona- Appari - Naga - Guam - Hollandia - Lahaina- Jolo - Brunei - Kuching - Stroeng Trang (Cambodia) - Kendari -
At Wake 548 shots were fired in the defense - causing 328 casualties - 3 guns and 4 vehicles lost - and 35 hits on 9 ships - some of them severely damaged - and one of which was later scuttled. In spite of this, the island fell to automatic shock attack later in the day.
At Rabaul 90 shots put 6 hits into 3 ships (2 each) - caused 289 casualties - but 24 Allied casualties and 1 gun were lost to counterbombardment. Earlier 142 casualties, 3 guns and 1 vehicle were lost - and 19 other hits scored - by the Japanese bombardment - while 2 warships had been hit once each - and DD Yukikaze set on fire.
At Lahaina 150 shots were fired in the defense - hitting 5 ships with 12 shells. There were 387 Japanese casualties and 2 guns lost, compared with 87 Allied casualties, 2 guns and 2 vehicles lost to counterbombardment. ML Ginyo Maru was badly damaged by 5 hits.
Mines were encountered at Jolo - but did no damage. Mines were encountered at Kuching - and one AP was set on fire by a mine hit.
7 shots were fired in defense at Kendari - doing no damage as such - but 435 casualties were suffered crossing the beach - while only 7 Allied casualties were lost.
A Japanese deliberate attack at Wuchang/Wuhan failed - 353 to 38 casualties. A similar attack at Sinyang forced several field armies to retreat - but cost 575 to 381 casualties. Another at Hong Kong failed - but with surprising 166 to 125 casualties. This is a poor showing for Allied troops with Level 5 fortifications and numerical superiority.
Jolo fell and its air base support unit retreated to Zamboanga.
Johnston Island fell with 1279 casualties from its surrendered air support unit.
Tavoy Burma fell to a company assault by airborne - its tiny forward air station unit retreating towards Ye (as planned).

This first day is the worst I have ever seen from a Japanese point of view measured in terms of Allied ship losses, or even measured in terms of aircraft losses. Nevertheless, I regard it as a good first day for Japan, in strategic terms. There were no serioius ship losses, and all the important and secondary landings came off without horrible casualties. Only at Wake was there a problem, and that reflects the real problem of landing in the teeth of strong coast defenses. Palau fell for the first time on the first assault. If the US Fleet at PH is in tact, it is not better off than before: Japan will sieze a forward air base and repair port with troops already ashore at Lahaina, and it already has Johnston Island up as a LOC base. The US Fleet can fight or run - or hide - as it pleases: the strategic situation is getting better regardless. The fleet is not fit to fight strong opposition - has not been able to successfully leave the area - and it is not free to mess with operations securing the SRA - so the strategic requirement - that the fleet be prevented from so doing - is achieved. In a day or two - the forward bases siezed will cause major casualties on ships fleeing forward areas - or trying to send reinforcements into them - and also serve as a springboard for consolodation and then further expansion operations. For the first time expansion to the NW - via Burma - is beginning at the start of the war - so the enemy faces offensives on several Axis - into Burma, Malaya, Philippines, NEI, Australian New Guinea, South China, central China, and into the Gobi, in addition to the main thrust into the Central Pacific and a minor one into the South Pacific.

8 December 1941 (US Time)
The night turn included landings or continuing landings at Legaspi, Kona, Apari, Lahaina, Brunei, Kuching, Guam, Hollandia,
Rabaul and Palembang. Mines and coast defense batteries were encountered at Brunei, but no damage inflicted by either.
Kuching was also still shooting, but also ineffectively.
Ro-30 was engaged - ineffectively - by an ASW TF at Palembang. The same TF encountered submarine laid mines there - but
was not damaged by them.

Ro-30 was engaged - ineffectively - by an ASW TF at Palembang. The same TF encountered submarine laid mines there - but
was not damaged by them. Ro-30 then attacked the same TF - and missed.
USS Pollock tried to attack the Main Body at Lahaina - and the escorts tried to attack USS Pollock - but no damage.
Ro-34 attacked AK Governor Taft at Olongapo - but missed.
I-173 attacked AK Kuala at Pearl Harbor - hit her with a single torpedo but started fires and caused heavy damage.
I-154 was attacked by an ASW TF at Tarakan, but not hit.
IJN Yamato let Nagato and Mutsu in bombarding Legaspi - doing massive port damage - a mistake since it is not defended.
Other bombardments occurred at Rabaul, Kuching and Lahaina. Day landings occurred at all the points listed above.
At Brunei, Rabaul and Kendari the gunners continued to shoot - but they could see this time - still they didn't hit anything.
USS Pompano attaked at Kona and USS Pollock attacked at Lahaina - but both failed to hit - and neither was damaged when
counterattacked by escorts.
Ro-33 was attacked by an ASW TF at Manila - but not damaged.

Day air raids began with 12 Ju-88s hitting Kota Bahru - damaging the airfield - a mistake as there are no planes there.
12 Ki-48s and 2 Ki-49s hit the intended airfield - at Georgetown (this is where the Ju-88s should have gone too) - doing slight damage.
50 Ki-21s followed up (1 was lost) doing moderate damage at the same location.

were not able to score.
7 Blenheims and 2 Vildebeeste attacked the cruiser SAG at Kuching - met 2 Petes overhead - and failed to score - although they all penetrated. None were damaged or lost. 10 Vildebeestes came back - met the same 2 Petes - penetrated to attack 2 AKs - but missed. None were damaged or lost.
6 B-17s escorted by 23 P-40s attacked the concentration of naval vessels at Legaspi. They met 18 Me-109T (called A9M1s), the prototype Rufe and 2 Petes. 4 P-40s were destroyed - but they got 3 of the Me-109s - and 2 B-17s were damaged - but no hits scored.

6 Nells out of Soc Trang, Indochina put a torpedo into HMS Repulse at Kuching - damaging her severly - in spite of damage to all 6 planes.
60 Vals and 12 Kates made an unauthorized raid on PH airfields ( I did learn why - if you don't say rest on naval attack orders the computer will make its own choices ). 70 Zeros escorted. 20 Allied fighters of 3 types were flying CAP. 13 Allied fighters were shot down - so was 1 Zero and 1 Kate. No damage was done to the targets - and many bombers were damaged.
19 Kates (and 1 Zero) tried to attack a naval target at Molokai - missed - and lost one bomber in the effort.

CA Exeter, CL Danae and 2 DD attacked at Kuching - meeting CA Ashigara and Nachi and 6 DD. Only Exeter survived, only DD Yudachi
was heavily damaged - and Exeter is in bad shape. HMS Prince of Wales - in this same hex - failed to engage.
Dutch submarine O-20 put 2 torpedoes into AK Koshu Maru - sinking her. Dutch sub KXV was attacked by escorts at Brunei - but not damaged by them. Apparently she tried to torpedo an AK.
Day bombardments occurred at Cotabatao and Legaspi (an error).
Lahaina, Naga, Apari, Rabaul, Kona, Kuching, Guam, Legaspi, Kavieng, Hollandia, and Soc Trang fell to ground assaults. Guam never fell to a first assault before. Neither has Rabaul. Kappa Kappa fell to air assault.
Brunei and Hong Kong did not fall to ground assault.

Enemy ground losses are more than 200 times Japanese ones. Ship losses are more than 8 to 1. Air to air combat exchange rates are running 6:1. These numbers - which cannot be sustained - represent fine performance while taking vital positions.
The attack by Force Z was a dismal failure - but the force at Kuching will retire while Prince of Wales remains viable. Bombers were flown into Kuching - in the hope of killing this force entirely. Others moved to Legaspi, Jolo, Apari - and to bases in Tailand. Me-109s offloaded at Lahaina and Ki-21s transferred there from Johnston Island. The field is too damaged to fly from - but that should change tomorrow.

We are slightly behind events here: work, a call to active duty for a day, and packaging of yet another version of RHS - combined with a down Matrix Forum - to mean that this report is being filed late. Another turn is already submitted - so we will have more events shortly.
This report is for 9 December 1941 (Hawaii Time)
The night turn began with mine attacks and coastal guns firing at Brunei - but no hits scored on the still landing Japanese Army brigade there.
In daylight 2 hits were scored on AP Seiki Maru.
3 RN DD attacked Ro-27 in the South China Sea - without effect - but indicating he is sending proper ASW groups to hunt sub contacts. These will build experience and in a few weeks the DD will become far more effective.
Dutch sub KXVI torpedoed AK Shingo Maru in the South China Sea. Later during the night she put 5 shells and another torpedo into the now hapless ship - which sank immediately thereafter.
The US Pacific Fleet sorteed undamaged from PH to disrupt landings at Lahaina - and fought a series of surface actions. The first was a night action vs the IJN Main Body - with 4 BB, 1 CL, 2 DD and 8 DD of IJN facing 3 BB, 1 CA, 2 CL and 6 DD. 4 hits were scored on the Japanese and 2 on the Allies - none of them significant. The same two forces immediately reingaged for a much more bloody battle, and this time 8 IJN ships got hit, 6 were set on fire, and one of those was badly damaged, by a total of 12 hits (5 on DE Kari). The Japanese scored 22 hits on 9 USN vessels, setting 4 on fire, and causing heavy damage to BB Maryland and BB Tennessee.
A Japanese cruiser destroyer flotilla from Jolo found AK Surucca at Zamboanga - sinking her - before bombarding the port. 24 hits.
2 divisions (of 3) PT boats attacked the transports at Lahaina, putting 2 torpedoes into AP Nissin Maru. 1 PT unit was hit by 5 shells, and 1 other transport took a .50 cal hit. 2 different PT boat divisions engaged a four ship force led by a ML - the Kona landing force - and both units got shot up. No torpedo hits - but 5 MG hits were scored on Japanese ships.
DM Wakataka met 2 PG at Cagayan, but many salvos by both sides failed to produce any hits. She then was attacked by USS Sargo - but the torpedoes failed to detonate.
USS Catchelot tried to attack the Main Body - but was driven off by her escorts - although they did no damage.
I-1 was attacked by 6 ASW units at San Francisco - without effect.
I-172 attacked a group of 4 DD near Molokai - but missed. They also failed to harm her.
USS Skipjack attacked the Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla at Jolo - but again torpedoes failed to detonate - and 7 escorts failed to harm her.
I-155 torpedoed AP Ormison at Darwin, setting her on fire.
I-153 torpedoed DD Edsal at Balikpapan, setting her on fire with heavy damage. No damage to I-153 when attacked by 4 DD present.
