Controlling Cav Raids?

Reading the manual & several posts in this forum, I learned about how important Cav scouting & raids are.
Actually playing the CSA in the 1861 scenario, I wanted to raid Paducah, because the Union were massing troops there & preparing for an attack on Humbolt. Van Dorn (starting in Memphis) not only raids Paducah, but also Cairo & Madison (iirc) & his movements ended in Humbolt, what I wanted to prevent, as Humbolt is the primary target of the assumed Union attack, & I don´t won´t to loose one of my few Cavalry troops during combat.
So is there a way that I can control how many regions are raided, or that they end in the same region, they started of?
Thx in advance.

No way to control those things, however, you may be able to withdraw some of your units prior to combat if you have more cavalry in the area than the attacking Union forces do.

This is the first I've heard of being able to retreat! So it sounds like you are saying we could move units OUT of the combat hex during the Reaction phase? And that is somehow related to the proportion of cavalry you have . . .

I don't recall reading anything about that in the manual, but please educate me.

Sectio 9.2, 3rd paragraph. Basically the attacker pins cav and mounted units equal to his cav and mounted units. If he attacks with 2 mounted units and you have 2 cav and 1 mounted unit, you could move one of your units out of the area before the combat.
