Fort bug?

Not sure if this has been said before, but first time I've encountered it (probably because I never use forts). I had several units in forts during detailed battle, however there seems to be a bug there, at times the units inside the forts will forget that they have huge cannons emplaced, and use their firearms instead. I thought that the cannons inside the fort would still fire no matter how close the enemy is, the clsoer the better actually as the cannons would then likely be loade with grapeshot and do massive damage. So, is this a bug, or working as intended for some reason?
And I know they will use their firearms if the fort is destroyed, however it was not. That is another issue thou, should my fort really break because MY emplaced guns fire over the walls???
And another thing I noticed in that battle, some of the garrison troops had picked up weapons from the enemy, which is generally nice, however one of the units had picked up....Shotguns.... gun value of 75/0/0/0/0/0/0 which makes no sense to why they would pick up those, as the lowest INF weapon holds the gun value 100/0/0/0/0/0/0. Besides, the shotguns are CAV weaps, are they not?

"Improvised" weapon type does have a 100 attack at range 1, but a "shotgun" has a 20% "charge protection rating" and the game evaluates this as being the equivalent of "improvised". Infantry should not be picking up cavalry weapons however.
Can you tell me what the attack report says exactly when units aren't using the fort guns? Does it not have the line "Base Damage (Attack from a Fort)" in it? Fort guns only work if the wall is undamaged; a damaged wall looks as though it's starting to crumble a bit, perhaps this is what you are seeing. It is different from a destroyed wall section.
The code to break fort walls is only called when there is an attack into a fort wall hex, however this includes counter-attacks when the guns on the fort attack another unit. So though it may look as though firing a gun causes a section of fort wall to crumble, it's really being caused by the automatic counter-attack that occurs in this case.

Hmm did not know about the charge protection rating. Learned something new today then [:)]

The attack report said "Minie rifle firing at range 6". The unit fired at another unit next turn with the fort gun however so it should not be broken.

Ok, guess that might be it then, however it then seems to me somewhat easy to break a forts wall? One or two rounds of rifle fire from one brigade at 6 hexes range and down it goes. Fire the same ammount of lead on an enemy brigade at that range and you might kill a total of 30 men if you are lucky...
