I'll report this as a bug.

I purchased the CD and printed manual version of the game. The manual text is printed on a dark gray background.
The back ground is dark enough to make reading the manual somewhat of a challenge.

Why couldn't you make a printed manual in the same format at the Operational
Art of War printed manual?

I'll second the complaint. Though I've been playing the game since the day after release, I just recently received the shipped copy and opened it up to see what the fuss was about. It is extremely difficult to read with the black on dark-grey format. I would recommend that Matrix preview ALL black and white manuals prior to release in their printed form - not just on a computer monitor. An easily avoidable blemish on a spectacular product. Hopefully, Matrix can lessen the damage by updating the file provided to Digital River, so that future manuals aren't relegated to the trash bin.

I took a look at the printed manuals at Origins. Personally, I find them legible but I understand the comments. I showed them to Marc and he confirmed that the printer had printed them a bit darker than intended, though to my eyes they are still perfectly readable. We'll make sure that whenever we reprint, the printer doesn't repeat that issue.
