New machine with Vista. Game installs and runs OK but I can't write anything the the installation folder.

C:\Program Files\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific

Also copying, movinf, deleting etc always comes up with I need administrator permission. I am the dam administrator.

why did you install there ? In Vista, anything in C:\Program Files is protected ...

I'd do a reinstall or copy to c:\ directory

OR you could try this, but I'm not sure it will work ....

[*]turn off access control
[*]check the properties of the top witp folder -> inside click the security tab folder. check authenticated users have permission to read,write,modify etc
[*]If you don't know how to change this, then there are web sites and on-line help that will give you some guidelines.

[*] On second thoughts ... don't do this second option, you might have to change the permissions of all your folders and files in C:\Program Files ... a hazardous undertaking...

Yep - lots of folks with a lot of programming experience have run into this roadblock - and ended up installing to the default.

VISTA is unforgiving in this matter... [8|]

I was inform some time ago that Vista needed all programs to be installed into Program Files for them to work correctly?

It gets stranger. I've just run a PBEM turn and averything worked. Next turn I viewed compat reports, Ops, intel etc from withing the game BUT when I went to email them the date was last month and the Replay file was three hours earlier? The txt files bares no resemblence to what happened, yet from within the game there fine. Where the h*ll has Vista put them???

OK fixed. Reinstalled to the default and everthing works fine. Two question why is the Program File folder like that and my opening videos don't run.

As for the videos - there could be a couple of reasons... make sure your Direct X settings are okay, and make sure your video drivers are up to date...

Sometimes other codecs can interfere with the video as well.

never crossed my mind that Direct X wasn't part of Vista every dam other thing is, even stuff you have no interest in or are ever likely to use.

Latest of everything but game intro video still wont run? Running the AVIs from the folder results in sound no video. Is this Codec? Note I've never had any problem running game videos on any othe OS.

Third attempt - forum software keeps logging me out:

Smells like a codec problem to me... try running some videos off U-tube. If they work OK and the WITP AVIs don't, it is pretty likely it is a codec problem.

Yep, had similar problem. For some reason Windows Mail will not reliably pull file attachments out of folders in Program Files, but it will for files from the default installation.

Strange are the ways of Vista (actually it is a cunning plan to increase sales of the upgrade OS "NotVista" which will be announced as soon as enough of the world has been converted to Vista[:D])

Yes - i think he is now devoting his time to answering all his "fan mail"... [:D]

Vista is designed so that the program files directory can be written to only on initial installation. This is intended to protect program security and integrity in this particular directory. Programs that operate from this directory store the writable files elsewhere.

WITP was Vista compatible from the start because it is designed to work from its own directory and doesn't borrow or share files with other programs.

You can defeat the security of the program files directory, but as Damian mentioned, this can be risky and in this case entirely unnecessary. Most pre-Vista programs will run fine in Vista if installed outside the program files directory.
