Look under a scenario's Settings, under the RuleVars. You should be able to find a rulevar that defines the stacklimit per hex.

I have found that, but the question is what would a realistic stacking limit be for a hex that is say "30 miles" i have increased it from 100 to say 700 this will let one division and one or two brigades or six brigades be in a hex without penalty. Does this sound about right or should it be increased or decreased? Thanks

During WW2 there could have been at best 10 divisions attacking simultaneously on a 30-mile front. (the size of the hex as you said it would be)
Naturally, there could (and would) have been other divisions behind these, but I think that the purpose of the stacking rule is to determine the number of troops that could attack comfortably - that is - before the soldiers start getting in each-other's way, not helping the attack but providing enemy with additional targets.

Now it's all a question of how you want to represent these 10 divisions ...
As Vic said - one subunit is supposed to represent a formation ... so, if you take a rifle to represent a company, that would give you: 4 rifles per battalion, 12 per combat command, 36 (40?) per division.
Plus an Machinegun per battalion, Mortar and AT gun per Combat Command and Division - that gives 9 (10?) Machineguns, 4 Mortars and 4 AT guns - a total of 69 (74?) stack points ...

Well, you get the picture ...
Cheers!

what if you have mechanzied divisions and tank brigades in a hex, one of these is more than 100. So wouldn't you have to increase the stacking points in order to have more than just one of these units in a hex with infantry.

As of now I can have one mechanized division, one armoured brigade or four brigades either armour or mechanzed and four more infantry brigades. my armour and mech unit stacking points are 148-, the mech division stacking point is 450, self propelled artillery Bde is 60. Infanry brigades are 20. Thanks
