Newbie question, is it better to have Grant as a very good unit commander with a capacity of 13+ or have him as a good Army commander, with sub commanders with average capacities?

AC by far. The AC is easily the most important position in the game.

Actually, I like to make him into a naval commander. Dude is awesome ruling the seas!

Then I send him on raider hunting duty. It's the best use of him!

edit: Apparently I better make this clear.

The preceeding comment is a JOKE. It is not meant to be taken seriously. If in fact it is taken seriously, please proceed immediately to the nearest ER and have your sense of humor replaced, as it is clearly not functioning. Inability to understand humor is dangerous, and can cause significant harm to yourself or others when left untreated. Thank you, and have a great day.

Just remember that the best Army Commanders have a 4 attack rating and 0 army modifier. A negative Army modifier (-1 or -2), will put a real cramp in inititive and combat.

If playing with leader randomization, you have to be flexible and realize your best AC might not be Grant. You could have a Grant with a -1 Army Command, combined with 4 Admin and 4 political rating, he would make a great TC.

When you start to add another layer of options, Unknown ratings, then it becomes a very interesting set of choices as ratings become known.

Grant as unit commander also subjects Grant to enemy fire [:-]  Lose him and you'll be in a world of hurt.

Just a question I have been wokering about....

Does the negagive army modifier ever go away? If so, does the leader need to be in command of an army in order for it to disappear, or can this happen when he commands a Corps?

Yes it can go away with success - I had Jackson has an AC and he had a -1 army modifier. Eventually, after some succesful battles his -1 modifier disappeared and he became almost like Lee. Very powerful.

As someone who always plays the South, I think he is most beneficial either be a unit commander in Missouri, or as a fleet commander off of Florida.

In my latest game I made Grant an AC as soon as he hit the board.  Then I made Sherman one as soon as he hit the board.  It helped with someone being injured or resigning right before Sherman came online.

"You've been listening to Berkut again, haven't you......?"

Hey, Berkut is the man. He and BJMorgan are all over this Grant thing. They are cutting edge, the veritable "bomb".

I mean, they are thinking way outside the box. I'm guessing that the success Grant accrues as a naval leader must be something like x4 or even x5 for calculation of promotion and command rating increase. I think these savy savants may be on to something.

They may claim to be southron advocates, but down deep, they "loves da U.S.Grant." [with apology to the campfire scene preceding the attack on Ft. Wagner in Glory.]

In one of those "I need to Know moments" I mad a TC of Grant....bad idea as in 4 turns no more than 1 out of three armies ever moved if that. Give him an army and turn him loose
