Questions About Multi-Player

Multi-player is a key consideration for me when buying a game, so I have a couple of questions. Can Hamachi be used for multi-player? Can't used TCP/IP since I got a router. Secondly, I read in one of the reviews that in multi-player, you could only play the Romans? Not sure I understand this. For example, if you played the battle of Alesia multi-player, can one of the players take the Gauls? Thanks.
