better use for the Nick

I'm always disappointed about the results of the use of the Nick.
Against allied fighter is a disaster [:-], ground attack [8|], against enemy bombers [>:]....
Maybe it's better to keep them on the ground? So the enemy don't score any points for each Nick shot down..[:)]

Kamikazes and naval attacks against PT boats are decent uses.

Use it as a FlAK suppressor when attacking enemy shipping. Its guns and durability make it hard-hitting ( and it can take out enemy unarmoured gun mounts as well as damaging enemy DDs significantly ) and relatively survivable. Used in this way it can damage DDs and reduce the FlAK which faces your torpedo bombers giving them increased survivability and effectiveness.

Ok. Thanks. So they can be useful at least..

I think the Nick is the Japanese equivalent of the P-39...it seemed like a good idea at the time.

You can say that about most Japanese planes. [:D]

To suppress flak on Allied ships, would the Nick's need to be set at 100feet and Naval Attack?

hmm... in real life, perhaps this would have worked better, but in the game? In the game attacking at 100ft with Niks is just plain "stupid". I don´t want to offend you though!

no offense, there is a question mark at the end of my sentence, just wondering how they would/could suppress flak on Allied ships. If they attack at anything higher, they drop bombs and only use their guns to defend against enemy aircraft. Please set me straight, how does this work?
Or are you saying that the thought of Nick's attempting to suppress flak is "just plain stupid"?

the flak suppression just doesn´t work and those fighter bombers will get shot down in droves attacking Allied TFs at 100ft. I shouldn´t have used the word stupid though.

No offence taken.
As to it not working.... Two points:
1. The best of tactics if improperly implemented will fail - this speaks less to the validity of the tactic than the flaws in its implementation.
2. I've tested it AND if you implement it properly it does work:
E.g. Day 1: Massed fighter-bomber 100 ft naval attack strikes to destroy FlAK guns etc etc accompanied by hordes of fighters to weaken the CAP +/- some ueber-high Kamis ( e.g. Oscar IIs ) to try and score some hits on CVEs and the like.
Day 2: Send in the torpedo bombers, again covered by hordes of fighters + whatever remains of the fighter-bombers.
On Day 1 IF you send in enough fighter-bombers and time your strikes right ( to split the CAP ) you will destroy quite a few FlAK positions ( what I term FlAK suppression) and inflict a good bit of sys damage on enemy DDs. This makes these planes easier targets for your Day 2 and 3 kamis and torpedo-bombers. Then in later days the Allied heavy ships become easier and easier targets as the shoal of small ( but dangerous ) ships surrounding them is thinned.
I've tested it and if done properly it works.

I've had some good suggestions on the best use of me....regrettably some other suggestions arn't fit for reprinting [;)]

the problem I see escpecially with the massed figther bomber attack is that I never had Japanese fighter bombers en masse. I guess usually I have 3 Sentais of Nick fighter bombers on the whole map until mid 44 or so. Okay, sending them in all of them would give me 108 if all would take off - which I highly doubt when I think about the usual percentage of aircraft taking off for nav attacks. IMO the implementation of those strafing attacks is a problem of the game, not because Japanese fighter bombers are too weak but especially Allied bombers with 8 x cal .50 seem not to be able to attack with effects seen in real life. I took far too heavy losses attacking with B-25s at 100ft not at all achieving the effects I thought they would have - speaking of flak suppression.

I actually like the P-39 in ground support...If you manage to find a base it can fly out of and hit IJA troops/transports at a range of 3 or less..
And with the P-39..It upgrades to the P-38.....
Of course the only problem is finding a good base for it...[X(]

Or, if you play CHS, finding P-38s for the upgrade! At least until late 1943...
