Amphibious assault

I do not grasp how it works. As Germany I put 3 units into amphibious mode but can not land anywhere. Must you move to sea first? Making it a two turn operation?

Also it would appear not moving amphibious units from ports may cause a crash to desk top. I did not move one, did not make any naval units ( know that bug) and at end of turn it sent me to desktop.

I am trying to get amphibious assaults to work as well but the units I send into the baltic and the north sea just dissapears and are never to be found again.

Copenhague is in the northsea as well, which makes the german invasion of Denmark a bit strange. Kiel not bordering to both the baltic and the north sea is another anomaly. The kielcanal should make that possible.

If amphib landing button is disabled - just hover the mouse over it to see the reason why landing is impossible. 3 most likely reasons: you try to land from wrong sea zone, you try to move-and-land in the same turn or you try to land on hex that is controlled by a country you are not at war with.

As for CTD when not moving amphib units - I can't reproduce this issue. I just did the following test:
1) Started Europe 1939 as Germany
2) Pressed F1 and added 1000 PP :)
3) Bought 5 AIP
4) Loaded inf. division in rostock to amphib. fleet. I went to navy screen and made sure that the amphib unit carrying this division appeared in Rostock port.
5) Pressed End turn

The turn passed, no crash. Next turn my amphib unit was still in Rostock. I moved to Baltic sea and pressed end turn. Again - everything was OK. Following turn i unloaded unit on Polish-controlled hex.

If you could isolate when this crash happens, i.e. describe a sequence of steps that always lead to the crash it'd be great help.

the

Please send me detailed step-by-step instructions how to replicate the problem. Use F1 "cheat screen" to get more PP.

Are you sure there was no sea battle, and your amphib units were not simply sunk?

I found the unit (doh!) and proceeded to invade Copenhauge, unfortunatly the Home Fleet found me and sunk the entire German fleet plus the invading unit. Taking denmark sure seems like a bigger commitment than ever! [:D]

Hint: hexes south of Copenhague are in Baltic sea zone, so you can invade Denmark from Baltic thus avoiding interception by british fleet. Or use paratroops ;)

I did that eventually but then I decided to invade Norway and then I need to use the North Sea. So only option is paratroopers then?

After losing my fleet several times trying to invade Norway, I finally just moved all three air armies to the north tip of Denmark along with my para unit. Use air strikes to pound the daylights out of the Oslo unit, then air drop in and take the city. This strategy worked like a charm.

OH NO!!! This isn't like SC, where all you do is build AirFleets and bomb your way to victory?? Also, are you limited to historical troop strenghts/numbers? Or can you field un-realistically high numbers? Again like SC....

Air units are very expensive in WW2 and less effective than in SC2. You can buy as much as you want, but it does not pay off. Playing as Germany if you spend all production on level 3 air armies then you could purchase about 4 per year. And 4 air units can only kill weaker units like 1st level inf division. Realistically, you'll be able to buy 1-2 strong air units per year. I think this bit is well balanced. I learned from SC mistakes [:)]

Ok I loaded my troops again on amphibious waited a turn, went to fleet screen and still could not invade anywhere. I had declared war on Denmark and had the units in the Baltic. I clicked on the amph fleet and it gave me no option except move, I could not drop anywhere. In frustration I moved to sea, the next turn I still can not invade anywhere.

Some help here please. the Rukes are clear as mud.

Aaah, you don't unload amphibias from naval screen. You do it from the main map - just click on a coastal hex where you want to unload and use this button:

Image

"Unload" button in naval screen is only for unloading units from transports (which should not be confused with amphibious)

Thanks, so I have to move my amphibs back to port?

No, the amphibious unit must be in the sea zone. Then go to main map, select the coastal hex for this zone and click the button marked in the screenshot. If the button can't be clicked the reason why will be displayed in the bar on the top of the screen.

I was able to invade Denmark easily as follows:
1 - Division in Rostock, buy 1 AIP and load the division
2 - Move the transport from the fleet screen from the Port to the Baltic
3 - Next turn - declare war on Denmark (or you can't invade) then click on the SW hex next to Copenhagen and invade.  Move into Copenhagen and that's that.

That seems like a workable solution but perhaps making Norway invadeable by putting part of it bordering to the Baltic would be a good idea? It does not appear to be a very historical situation does it?

So, the only way you can take Denmark is by Amphibious Assault? Is this how it was done in WWII??

I'm trying real hard to like this game. I'm torn between this one and Kharkov DOTD???

Nah, I did an airborn assault and it works just fine. No interception possible. Then you can move the AB unit to the north tip of Denmark for a landing in Norway.

There are no straits between Jylland, Fyn and Sjaelland if thats what you mean. Some kind of amph or para-operation is in order to reach Copenhague.

use your ships to bombard - that seems to work also - plus airborne and you can do it - I agree though I would have:
1)  Copenhagen attached to mainland, make the strait a river instead - or diplomatic - they just capitulate (better as amphib still faster)
2)  Have Baltic extend further as sea zone to cover near to Oslo - or make interception of invasion less certain
