Seeing as the HCE Challenge thread got no feedback whatsoever...

Who is interested in participating in a tiered scenario design contest that may offer discounted or free games as prizes, the choice of having your scenario in the next release of HCE, and who knows what else?

Given the less than stellar response, I'm actually curious how many folks are using the Scenario Editor at all. Can we get some replies, please?

I'm interested in learning but haven't touched it yet.

We were intending that the HCE Challenge would be a great learning experience for people new to scenario writing. Hence the desire to break it up into Novice, Intermediate and Advanced categories. There would be plenty of instruction and assistance for new folks.

The more people we can get writing scenarios, the more enjoyment we can squeeze from this game for everyone. [;)]

I'm actually in the process of play-testing a home-grown scenario right now.

Excellent Warhorse, we'll be looking forward to your sharing it [8D] so that everyone can play.

I use the editor to mostly monkey with existing scenarios, modifying them and tweaking here and there typically after I've already played it. Frankly getting one built from scratch - getting all the orders and multiple start points and all that in is too much work, particularly when I'll know where stuff is and what platforms are there when I play it. I'm not sure I'm interested in learning how to really use the editor to make scenarios to share - it would take more time than I want to spend. I can play Harpoon or other games in my limited free time or make scenarios with the editor that won't be much good for me. That sounds really selfish - sorry [:(].

Not at all. We certainly appreciate and understand that not everyone will be into creating scenarios for public consumption. It can be a lot of work. Thanks for your informative and honest reply. [:)]

Actually I got more interested in the editor after my response and have started dabbling in it more. I put together a scenario sort of like the boomer bastion in the GIUK battleset, except with the Chinese boomers and escorts using the wester pacific battleset. If I make enough variable start points and variable units I can be much less certain of exactly what I'm going to face. I also added neutral subs here and there (maybe!) so I can't just shoot and ask questions later.

My main issue seems to be with the AI running the enemy. I had the boombers and escorting subs in a formation, no movement orders (hold station) and with variable start points. When I tested I found one boomer and destroyed it, the escorts all took off running from the torpedoes as expected. Problem is one of them never stopped - it kept zipping around at 31 knots and never settled down. Of course it was so noisy running that fast that every sub I had got a track on it. Why did it not slow down again? Is there something I need to do in the scenario to get the AI to operate better? Give them a track instead of just a fixed position perhaps?

I have seen this before - you drop a fish on a sub and it speeds off and never seems to stop zipping at max speed, and is of course much easier to localize and sink than if it settled down and went back to creeping.

Owl, I wonder if you could start a new thread regarding this issue? Lets try and keep this one for the Scenario Design Contest, please.
