Questions from a former HP II player

OK, maybe this has been asked before, but I cant find it.
I know that there was once a MAC OS Version for Harpoon III. I assume that you guys only talk about the M$ version, right ?
I visited the AGSI Site. There is still a MAC version aviable, something like 3.6.2 or so.
Would it be a problem to play that version ?
What is the main difference ???
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And another weired thing :
There is a site called harpoon HQ. They blame the AGSI devs for being .......(wont post, I will not violate the forum rules here ) They seem to have zillions of scenarios I would like to play and they seem to have endless stuff for HPIII v. 3.6.
I read that the new version is not compatible to their scenarios there. I see ppl posting here asking for more scenarios.
why these changes ?
And if 3.6 is compatible to the massive stuff, any chance to get it somewhere ? I assume : not from here, right ?
and why is a HPIII fansite so violent against the devs now ? ???
sorry for may putting a finger in a bloody wound but I dont understand all this and I plan to buy this game and I asked myself if I should go for the newer M$ version or should I get the MAC OS Version.
comments ?
thank you
an WITP veteran.

There's nothing wrong with the Mac version for H3.6.2 AGSI kept that version available for Mac players because ANW wasn't release as compatible with Mac. However, AFAIK, I've read messages from some folks who have reported that they are able to play ANW with their Mac using emulators with little difficulty. Sorry, I can't find them, atm.
The biggest difference, IMO, is the inability to play MP in H3. There are others, but that is likely the most noticeable. Other significant differences between ANW and H3 are:
1) Sonobuoys work somewhat better in ANW (but are still flawed),
2) Aircraft logistics are nearly 100% functional in ANW (this was a significant problem in H3)
Some of the scenarios on hhq are compatible with ANW. They are specifically noted as such when you download them. The biggest incompatibility between H3 scenarios and ANW scenarios is the new damage model introduced in 3.9.0. If you play an H3 scen with the ANW game engine, you will find that you cannot destroy any of the land facilities (even with nukes [;)]).
But, don't worry. The
PlayersDB has you covered whichever version you choose with over 300 scenarios.
Harpoon3.6.3 users can get the
Complete Harpoon 3.6.3 Library
Harpoon ANW users can get the
Complete Harpoon ANW Library
My personal opinion would be to stay with H3 as the bugginess in ANW is being worked on, but there seem to be many, many problems. A comprehensive third-party list of
* Known Harpoon [ANW] Issues has been exhaustively collected on
HarPlonkHQ since the release of Harpoon ANW 3.7.0
This is not to say that H3 didn't suffer from bugs, too. However, the version did seem to be much more stable and generally more reliable.

Howdy,
Harpoon 3.6.3 was the last Mac version as our Mac developer left. We do test and develop for compatibility with Virtual PC and I'm looking into VMWare. Those are both viable and free options.
I believe most of the HHQ database (units) and scenarios (levels to play) are designed to work with 3.6.3. You can confirm that at their site. There was no conscientious effort to break backwards compatibility but also few measures taken to make it easier. Over the years the game has evolved in steps and bounds and so precisely designed scenarios do not work. There are some updating all the older scenarios to work with the latest version, 3.9.3. But the main difference between 3.6.3 and 3.7+ is the multiplayer feature. 3.7+ has it.
The reasons for the hostility are numerous and often catch new (or old) hands in the middle of the arguments when they ask simple questions. I'd say the reason for the hatred for the devs was a lack of communication and attitudes on both sides. Recently we have taken more steps to address user wants but nothing will happen overnight.
Thanks for asking,
Harpoon

The quickest way to see if ANW will run for your Mac is to try out the Demo for yourself:
http://computerharpoon.com/public/Harpo ... Demo_3.exe
Just be aware that some problems have already been (repeatedly) reported by Demo users. [:(]

first of all, thank you for your help esp herman and russell !
maybe there is a misunderstadning : I dont have a VPC. I have boot camp installed instead. It is just the question if I should go for the XP Version or the old Mac OS version.
the demo seems to be an XP file as Mac OS cant use .exe files at all
I was just coriuos if I should go for the 3.6 MACOS version ( which is still aviable from the devs site ) or the ANW 3.9.3 version at all for win XP.

thank you so much for your help, it helped alot ![&o]
